Do you react differently to meeting ppl online vs IRL?

Hello,

I am doing a sociology paper that deals with the dynamics of meeting people online vs meeting them IRL.

The point of the paper is that by meeting ppl online the racism is reduced b/c you can not see them and only know what they choose to tell you about themselves.

I need some "factual" data, so please fill out my poll 🙂.

Any thoughts or links to what you think are relevant resources are also appreciated.

Uhm, I started chatting with my now gf knowing her race. So I guess that means it doesn't make a difference to me.

I can't believe anyone acts the same online as they do online .. it seems to me that the Internet is a bit like alcohol, it reduces one's inhibitions. I would say it has a big impact on the way we act.

people like to pretend a lot on the internet so im a little less trusting of what they say... im pretty shure they are lying to me

It's not so much about how people react differently. You re correct, that is pretty much a given.

It s more of a look as to how racism plays into this dynamic...

i can be much more blunt to people online

because if i say something they dont like, and they bitch about it...i can instantly not listen to it anymore.

I express my opinions more readily on a internet forum than I do IRL since there's less of a chance I'll face someone who's confrontational, not that I have any radical views, but I believe discussions tend to be less emotional online than IRL.

I'm also friendlier in person or so I've been told.

Well, like everyone is saying, it's a gimme that, unless people volunteer the information, race is not factored in. Besides, like someone pointed out, some people lie online so you really can't 100% believe what's vounteered. OTOH, if one person concludes (based on whatever criteria he's using) that the other is of a different race, then racism may enter into the mix.
