Do you prefer the sound from an American or European v8?

American muscle is american muscle. Its an apples orange comparison you're tying to make. Now the exhaust note of a ducati vesus japanese? No comparison. I suspect that is why japanese makers have tried to emulate.

European all the way. Nothing sounds as sexy as a good old Ferrari engine, except perhaps the Vanquish V12. Muscle cars never grew on me and I don't much care for throaty V8's.

Sound? Obviously the cross-plane crank American V8. Performance-wise, the flat-plane European V8 has more absolute potential though.

There are many different examples of european V8's. From the American-esque older BMW M5 engine to the high strung ferraris.

I love the sputtering idle of highly tuned american V8's, followed by the defining roar they make when you give them all the gas they can take.

 the BMW M5 (2000-2003) had an excellent V8 engine.

I've been in the E39 BMW M5, and that had a low growl from it?s V8, and that sounded nice. Went pretty well too :p. But I guess the American V8?s are renowned for their beefy exhaust tone, even though I?ve never heard one in real life.

I like all "Real" engine sounds. It really doesn't matter. Each is distinct but that does not make one better than the other. American V8s are more throaty while European are more high pitched and smooth. What it comes down to is do YOU drive a car with a nice exhaust note? Fart pipes on little 4 poppers don't count. I bet not one of the people claiming to prefer European V8s will ever be able to afford one....especially if it is a truly exotic car.

I love my 289. I can hear everything. The air rushing into the intake, the sweet valvetrain, and the exhaust. It's an adrenaline rush.
Open headered is awesome as well.
And yes, I love Italian V8's, but I prefer American rumble.

Subaru is 4 pot and sounds awesome.

No they don't. They are definitely a decent car but don't try to pass of their exhaust note as something nice. You cannot make a 4 banger sound anything but anemic, even if the car is fast.

Sounds pretty grunty to me. More so than many v8s.

Vette V8 sound better than even ferrari V8s. I like the lower throatier burble compared to an almost v6 pitch of the ferraris.
