do you own an fop38?

correct me if i'm wrong here, but isnt the heatsink supposed to come into contact w/ the little 1/4 in square tha'ts on the duron surface? with the closer they are, being better?

i placed the fop38 on top of the duron and there's about an inch gap in between the two which is caused by those 4 little plastic "feet" that protrudes from the corners of the duron.

they are nowhere close to touching each other. am i gonna have to shave off those little "feet" ? :disgust::Q

which fop38 did you get? Is the plastic feet on the hsf? if so you got the version for the fipchip pentiumIII/celerons. Just shave off the plastic feet on the heatsink. Be care not to scratched the heatsink surface. You DO NOT WANT TO REMOVE THE FOAM RUBBER FEET ON THE DURON.

hi adul, i got the fop38 for socket a. it doesnt have the little feet. just a pink thermal pad at the bottom of the heatsink...which i scraped off very carefully.

is this normal to have a full INCH gap between the heatsink and the cpu surface for fop38 users? i havent even booted my system up yet for fear of frying my cpu or mb, or both.

fop38 owners out there!!! i need your help!!! thanks!!!

Check to make sure you installed it correctly, there shouldnt' be ANY gap between the heatsink and the core.

i dont think i'm mounting it wrong... the thing is just near impossible to hook onto the socket. i put one end of the clip on the little ridgehook on the socket, then w/ the other end of the clip w/ the dangling hinge, i try to push it down to hook onto the socket, but it just wont bend down enough to reach it.

i even took off the fan, literally BENT the clip with a ton of force to try and straighten it out a bit more, and its still impossible to install it onto the kt7 board.

is it possible to buy new or different clip/hooks for these globalwins? my fingers simply can not take any more torture from trying to install this little devil in the disguise of a heatsink.

btw, i just powered up the fop38 by itself to see how loud the fan is. you would definitely notice that it is there, but its really not THAT loud... i'm used to background noise already at my office at work, so not a big deal for me.

Control yourself when you use a flathead screwdriver to install the HSF. You can slip and scrape your motherboard!

First off - I have heard that the FOP38 doesn't quite fit on the KT7 and KT7-RAID board because a capacitor that sits close to the socket prevents the heatsink from sitting properly. Aparently you have to bend it away from the socket before the FOP38 will fit correctly. I don't have a KT7 though, so I can't say this for sure.

Second - I recently purchased a FOP38 and have a question about the fan. When I use the included 3-pin to 4-pin adapter and connect the fan directly to the power supply it rotates very fast and produces a very loud sound. It is practically akin to the noise level of a hairdrier on low (but much higher pitch). When I connect the fan tot he motherboard via the native 3-pin connector it rotates at a much slower speed (5800RPM - still pretty fast) and generates much less noise. Fortunatley, I haven't noticed much of a performance delta when using the lower speed. I am told that this risks burning out the motherboard, but I have three fan headers, so I don't really care if I burn out one of them!

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, how much of a performance difference have you noticed.

um, hte fop38 fits the kt7 and kt7raid perfect. I use a needle nose to pull down that damned clip, werks perfect ;-)
