Do you often have to tell people to STFU in the movie theater?

I'm 24 and I'd never done it until we went to see the Ring a couple of weeks back. In the past people talking always annoyed me but it was never too bad. Also after 15 minutes people generally quiet down as the ritalin kicks in. But for the Ring these few teenagers behind us, about 19 years old. My god one of them _would not_ shut the damn hell up. It was a packed theater and without even quieting down his voice he kept yap yap yapping with some monologue about the movie. After 10 minutes and people in the row in front of us looking back wondering if anybody would tell him to shut up I looked back and said "How's about quieting down?", then he asked his friends what I'd said. I guess he didn't realize what a cock-whore he was. He did quiet down significantly at that point but ocassionally he'd yap up about something and one of his friends got in a small argument with him in the middle of the movie telling him to shut up as well!

I hate doing it because I know that the person is fantasizing about kicking me in the back of the head, but oh well!

Must be that movie. I had to tell some kids in front of me 3 times during that show to shuttup. Though it wasn't as bad as when I saw pearl harbor. I actually had to through things at them to get their attention and tell them to shuttup.

edit:

there are few things that piss me off as much as people who talk through movies. Hell, if I'm gonna pay $8 to see a movie, I'm gonna enjoy it. And if some little bastards (or even big bastards) wanna talk, then they can just leave the theater. If they have a problem with it, talk to the management.

eheh ... my friend went to go see a movie and the guy in front of him had a baby that started crying and my friend said to himself "shutup" .. then the father looked back at him and said "you got something to say to me?" (the father was pretty big from what he tells me) so then my friend just said "nope".

but I usually don't know how to handle it.

Depends on the theater and the movie playing.

Arty film at theater catering mostly to "wears only black" crowd: nice and quiet.

Vin Diesel flick at nearby mall/gang-banger-wannabe gathering place: crying babies, cell phones going off, people yelling at the screen, fights breaking out...the works. I pretty much quit going there even though it's only 5 min from my house.

Only time I've told someone to shut up was during Star Wars episode one. Now though, I have my GF with me when I go to the movies, and I don't like to use profanity or burst out in anger when she's around. :) I just quietly throw popcorn... J/K.

Too bad your friend wussed out. I would have asked him to keep his baby quiet or take it outside. A theatre is no place for a screaming brat. I have had to ask people to quiet down. I went to see Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and while I know it's a kids movie and I'm expecting there to be a bunch of young kids there, I also expect the parents to do a reasonable job of keeping them in check. These ladies were just letting these kids run all around the theater making all sorts of noise, and the mothers completely ignored them. I eventually had to ask the mother if she could have her kids sit down and keep quiet, and she acted all annoyed. Oh well.

It was one of the kids' first time seeing a movie in a theatre. She was only about 3, I'd say. When my parents took me to the movies for the first time, I was given a stern briefing on how to behave in the theatre under threat of being taken home before the movie was over. I sat still.

I was watching American History X in the theaters and some high school kid (I was in high school at the time) wouldn't shut the hell up. I got up and asked him "F***! Would you shut up?" He didn't, and the whole theater started to yell at him. It was sweet.

I've told parents to take their whiney children to the lobby so my daughter and myself could enjoy movies before. People sometimes get defensive when you approach them on this - but, hey - they're the asshat parents that think they can bring their babbling brats to the movies. If they want their 2-year-olds to see a PG-13 movie, then they should wait for it to be released on VHS/DVD and save us all some frustration! :(

I'm slowly training my wife to STFU during movies... She's not bad, but I like the person I'm with to be COMPLETELY quiet. :)

The ocassional laugh, "awwww," or scream is okay. Other than that -- NO NO NO! Why do people CLAP during movies? Who or what are they clapping for? The actors who can't hear them? The two-dimensional movie screen? The popcorn? The jujifruits? The video arcade next to the theater?

I refuse to go to the theater anymore.

First you have to find parking, then the prices are through the roof for tickets, you have to get there way early, wait in line for 30minutes, wait in the theater for another 30 just before the show, then you have to wait for everyone to get out of the theater, then you have to avoid traffic getting out of the parking lot and then go home.

No thanks. I have had enough movie going experiences in my day. Ill be content watching it on DVD and splitting the $4 cost with a few friends (you have too when you are a college student :) )

Nope. I go during the day, during the week. I never go in the evenings and/or on the weekends anymore. Not only do rude people ruin the film, but I hate crowds and lines.

Besides, matinees save money :)

Boy do i have a story. Well, ok... lemme say Minority Report is my favorite movie...

Anyways, i was at the theaters seeing it for the 4th time, and then these teenagers 5 rows ahead of me would not STFU!!!! It was hhorrible... the whole theater would hear them and NO ONE would say anything. After that, i had lost it....

I took my Large pop, and thru it at the middle kid, Getting a little of the other 2 friends who sat next to him wet.

Holy $h!t it was a sight to see! right after the pop hit him, the WHOLE theater burst out laughing, and the kid stood up. He started swearing and stuff. At the same time, every one was laughin. After that, he left, and his friends followed him shortly.

One of THE best experiences of my life. lol :)

Also, the people sitting next to me were like, "good job".

<cs radio voice> Fire in the hole! </CSRV>

There's a bulk-food store right next to the theater in my hometown. Nothing like hard candies for CDN$0.88 a pound. They don't taste all that great, but at least you don't feel like you wasted your money when you fastball a clump of them at the back of someone's head.

I confronted some wannabe gangsters during Saving Private Ryan -- they were laughing and hollering during the opening battle scenes :|

my friend does NOT shut up during a movie...its like he feels compelled to talk about how bad a movie may or may not be during the effing movie...reason i avoid going to the movies with anyone else but my gf anymore...its just more soothing and relaxing
