Do you notice when other people overcrank their cars?

I was home just now and told my mom to drive my car so that I can gauge if it is consuming oil. She starts it and overcranks by about 2 seconds. The sound made me cringe lol.

I usually undercrank so that the engine stutters a bit and then kicks in. What do others do.

I've never replaced a starter in any car I've owned in my entire life. My current car doesn't start unless it needs to so I'm just activating drive mode. If it needs the gas engine on the computer handles that.

I'm more like you though. I'll under crank rather than over crank.

I crank it the perfect amount.. over-cranking makes me want to club a seal.

Mine doesn't allow over cranking it and the starter is locked out once running.

Got me wondering...?

Can you overcrank with remote start...?

We have an older Onan generator 300KW at work that all you do is push "run" on a switch and it cranks till it hits a certain RPM and the starter drops out automatically, think this is from alternator sensing...? Also has an anti-restart which means you cannot re-engage the starter while the engine is running... So figure these two are part of the same circuit... Would be nice to have this on cars and trucks too...

Also bet if your still using hand crank then you don't over crank...:p

It annoys me too. To me it's a clear indication that they don't understand what they're doing. They just turn the key and hold it for a while and hope it stays running when they let go of the key.

Technically, you really can't overcrank on most cars anyway. The pinion gear disengages once the engine runs. You are just running the starter motor under no load at that point, it's not connected to the flywheel anymore.

My dad has a bad habit of "giving it gas" when he cranks the car. Keep telling him he doesn't have to do that with a fuel injected car.
