Do you negotiate with people on ebay

I have been watching an auction. I felt the seller was asking too much for initial bid + shipping.

The auction recently ended with no bids and I sent the seller an email telling them I wanted to buy the item for less than the initial price + shipping.

Does anyone else do this?

no and i wouldn't sell an item outside of the auction anyways.

i had people that would email me and lowball me on some items when i worked for an ebay company, and i would simply email me them back and tell them the listed price is set.

I've done something similar. The auction was a couple guitars and a cheesy amp, I was only interested in the one guitar, so I emailed him after it ended.
Nobody ended up bidding on the relisted guitar and amp either.

You're asking a question, I don't see why not. Plus he can recouperate on his losses..?

I've occasionally offered a fair price above the initial price if the seller listed the same city as me - offer a fair price, save everyone the hassle of shipping. That way if there's no bids yet, they're free to end the auction and sell to me and I just pick up the item.

Nothing wrong with what you're doing though - just don't expect the seller to necessarily respond.

That is fair. If the price is set, then the price is set. Besides, your prices were probably set there for a reason (market value, minimum price and still make profit).

From a buyer's perspective though, there is no harm in asking.

Absolutely. Some have and some haven't.

If I'm really desperate, yes. Otherwise no. Ex: I'm selling off my sister's old laptop and I had some douchebag lecture me in 3 seperate emails about the proper way to sell, how Paypal pwns all over MO's, and why I should lower my price to accomodate him. Fvck you douchebag prick, you've been buying on eBay for less than 3 months now, what the fvck do you know? Not to mention his ebay handle is something about altezza taillights on a Mustang, fvcking idiot.

ha that is nothing, I recently sold someone a P3 450 SECCII chip for about $1.25, had it lying around and was listing other stuff so I figured if someone else needed it then I would let it go....guy bought it and paid me $4 for shipping and I charge an additonal $1 for optional insurance...generally on items that are so cheap I don't bother getting insurance through the post office but instead refund buyers no questions asked providing they pay the dollar, if they don't pay for insurance then I only refund them purchase price and not shipping charges.....

This guy who bought the chip emailed me back two weeks later saying that while he got the chip he is upset that I made him pay for insurance but never got it through the post office....I explained to him my policy, pointed out that I have over 180 positive feedbacks and if he told me that the item was lost or broken I would have refunded or replaced it no questions asked....he emailed me two more times continuing it on, finally I told him that if he emailed me and asked outwright for a full refund I would give it to him, otherwise to stop bothering me over a $2.00 item, also I let him know he was the reason why I will never sell a low dollar item again as it just isn't worth the headache.....

In response to the OP, go ahead and try, it doesn't hurt to ask, and if an offer is good enough I know I will consider it.

Occasionally. I'd also recommend asking him to relist with a buy it now price of something more agreeable, then you have the safety of actually going through ebay.

Wait a second, ebay doesn't give two shits about buyers. Nevermind.

I hate when people do this. The starting price and buy it now price is there for a reason. The funny thing is they always think they're doing you a favor.

One guy had the audacity to offer 100.00 for an item that I was moving one a day of for 325. Why do people think they're that entitled? I wouldn't even offer 100.00 for an item who's retail was 350 if I was buying 100 of it.

In most cases I delete the email or I say something like sure, if you add blah blah for shipping and the shipping amount is equal to what I would have gotten. THey usually get pissed at the sarcasm.

The proper way to do this is to email the seller and ask what he'd take to end it early. Also say you'd be willling to pay with non CC paypal or buy off ebay to save them the fees. I did this with a motorcycle jacket I really needed quickly and got a great deal on it.

I got a seller to pull a part out of an auction that had bids on it, and I have the part right here. Woot.

lol, cheap dumbasses I guess :| It wasn't the fact that he tried negotiating with me - I have ZERO problem with that - it's just that he lectured me on the proper way to sell on eBay. How the reason no one was bidding was because I wanted MO only and not Paypal for that auction. It's not like I started the bidding at $.01 - I started it at the bare minimum price I wanted. He then lectured me on why his price was fair and how I was being a greedy prick, despite just this morning someone buying it using Buy It Now! He also lectured me on how bad a seller I was for not replying back to him within 5 minutes of his email

You could try if you want to. However if he rips you off then ebay couldnt do anything about it since the transaction didnt involve them.

Once I was bidding on one thing from a guy, he had something else I was interested in but I didnt want to pay even his minimum for it.

After the auctions ended I won the thing I bid on, and no one bid on the second thing. So I emailed him asking if he would be willing to also sell that other thing to me for a lower price. He agreed to it.

Had he screwed me over I could have atleast given him negative feedback with the one auction that I had one from him.

But in the end everything went fine.

That sounds kind of shady, do you post your confusing ass policy on your auction.

Seller should offer buy it now price to leverage his selling price and it only cost 5 cent!
