I've registered, but I can't find that little sucker. Would a driver's license work?

Most likely any government issued ID will work.

The only problem would be if you are not on the local registration list.

i just got back and they have a sign posted "signature ID required"

They don't even require an ID here at all :(
I'm gonna have to write my state rep on that one.

i just showed my DL and had to fill out a change of address form. i vote early so i could basically vote anywhere in texas and they'd find my precinct for me and give me the right ballot.

I show up, show them my driver's license... that's it...

doesn't it have your signature on it anyway?

Where I live in Bucks County, Pa. you don't need any ID with you at all. You DO need to sign in, and they visually match your signature against the voter registration rolls. Of course, my polling place is just down the street and the registration table was staffed by two of my closest neighbors, so I did have to field questions like. "How come your rooster doesn't visit us anymore?" :)
