Do you need Win 98 installed on your PC to use the Win98SE upgrade?

If I can get ahold of the Win98SE upgrade can I install it on a PC that doesn't have an OS yet?

Thanks,rnmcd

No, you don't need to have Win98 installed -- however --

You will need a Win98/95 disk because the upgrade will ask for it, to confirm you "own" a copy of the full program.

There's been a story going around about a "trick" you can use to do a full install from a Win98 upgrade, but I've never seen anyone explain it.

don't know if this helps, but you can delete or rename win.bat in the windows directory to win.bak and Windows will think you are installing a new version of itself. Of course this assumes you already have a version of Windows already....

What Uber Neuman said plus you can use the Windows 95 disc if you don't have the Win 98 disc handy.

So let me get this straight, I can use my WinME upgrade and Win98 OEM number to do a full install? Lets say I'm formatting a HD, and I insert my WinME upgrade disk first, will it allow me to start formatting or will it ask for a full version disk first? Or will it ask for a full version disk later, to make sure I have one?

maybe I can answer you question, NOX. I installed Win98 "upgrade" on a cleanly formatted hard drive without a problem. Win98 scanned my hard drive for a previous version of Windows. upon finding none, it asked for a Windows disk. I put in my Win95 OEM full version cd, pointed Win98 to look at my cd-rom, and voila! Win98 was satisfied and installed correctly. regarding your specific situation, WinME should install correctly once it reads your Win98 cd, though as for the Win98 "number"... if you are talking about the serial number, I believe WinMe will require its own, and will not be able to use your Win98 serial number.
