Do you need to power off a laptop to remove/add PCMIA card?

Just wondering. Does it harm the card/laptop in any way if I don't?

Also, in Linux, do I need to disable the card before I can remove it?

EDIT: Oops, wrong thread. How did I get here?

EDIT 2: Since I'm here...No, you don't need to. You should however disable it using the Unplug/Eject Hardware icon so apps know to stop using it.
