Do you need to call American Express before you make a large purchase?

I'm going to be making a several thousand dollar purchase on my Amex, something which doesn't happen very often. Do I need to call them before I make the purchase so that they don't think the card was stolen?

P.S. - For those of you who don't have Amex's, they have a very good security program. But one problem is if you use your CC 3 times within an hour or two they don't always let it go through without some confirmation. I don't know if other brands have that.

No. The worst that happens is it's declined at the register or the terminal asks the cashier to call into AMEX's number and verify the card CID number or whatever security crap they had on the card. (Happened a few times back in my retail days)

you dont have to call but it wouldent hurt

last time i made a big one ~1800$, it went through fine and AMEX CALLED ME to verify it, i like that they did that

I just made a 3k purchase on my mastercard .... they didn't even call to verify. I called them before to ask them about the daily spending limit and they said I didn't have one. Kind of scarry if someone gets ahold of my credit card.

This is how it happens for me, too. Not with Amex, though.

I bought my Digital SLR + lenses ($2000) with my AMEX and an AMEX representative called me to verify it. I am glad they did it, I feel secure this way

I have done $20k on mine in one month, $12k of it in one purchas and they call me to makesure I could pay it back and that it wasn't stolen.

I've boguht thousands of dollars worth of merchandise on it and it never did a thing.

But then again, I had/have an AMEX gold business and blue for business, so I would assume they would have lots of purchases. And considering there is no limit, I don't see why they'd care.
