Do you need to be good in art in order to be good with Adobe Photoshop?

No.

But you have to understand colour, contrast, composition... etc

Depends what you're trying to do in PS. To create something from scratch, yes, I think you do have to have some talent and/or an eye for art, colors, etc. To photochop an image, I dont think that takes talent or artistic ability as much as it takes knowing the program tools well.

Lots of different kinds of Photoshop users. Some are really technical. They can use curves, contours, channels, levels, filters, and actions to get the exact effect they want. Other people are artistic. Give them a tablet and a blank Photoshop document and they'll come up with a great looking scene from scratch. But if you're artistic and know your way around Photoshop's technical features, you've got it made.

Everyone and their mother thinks they're good on photoshop. But artistically not everyone can use the program for what it's really meant for.

logically it would be limiting. creating original work from scratch requires artistic talent.

Of course you have artists so technologically impaired that they can't use a door handle for what it's meant for, let alone they could draw something in Photoshop.

Well, those skills can be learned in other ways.

I suck at drawing but I'm pretty good (getting better) w/ PSP (PaintShop Pro) and manipulating digicam pics. I could use Photoshop but I don't feel the need at this point. In my case, I'd say the answer is "no".

Software is just a tool, like a brush, paints and canvass. It's what you do with it that counts. If, by "good in art," you mean having an eye for how things should look, you have two choices -- Be good, or be damned lucky.

As a musician, I learned that being good is just permission to be lucky.

I dont believe that you can "learn" talent. It's inborn. Sure, you can develop skills and such, but to be really good, IMO, you must have talent. You can learn the programs all you want, you can really know the tools, but to create a quality work, it takes more than that. It takes talent. Thats just MHO.
