Do you need phone service to get DSL?

I am moving into my first house in Oct. I would like to get DSL, but I don't necessarily want to get phone service through SBC. Do I have to get phone service in order to get DSL?

yeah unfortunately you do...I just ordered from SBC and had to get one. You can try to get the metered service that charges for local calls though. Then dont' make any calls on the phone and you'll be fine. My normal phone (unlimited local) with no features is costing me $20/month.

Is that $20 a month with taxes?

Yes, but I'd have one anyway, so no big deal to me.

I tried to go without a home phone (cell-only) for a few months, but I didn't like it, and I didn't save money, since I needed a lot more cell phone minutes.

I don't like to give my cell phone number to anybody and everybody. I like the flexibility that having two phone numbers gives me. It gives me power over other people in a way, to give them a number that isn't my cell phone number, like letting them know, "no, you CAN'T reach me wherever I am, I don't give you permission!"
