Do you need more than 1024*768 on a laptop? Poll

I've been tossing back and forth about how "much" laptop I need and I'm wondering, do I really need more than 1024 resolution on a laptop? I'm on a very tight budget. I am a pretty big gamer, but aren't sure I'll even play games on my laptop. I mean I can get a pretty good system for 1200 w/ just XGA res, or one w/ more for 1600+.

What do you say?

There's no need. 1024 is plenty of desk space for the average user. I'm running 1024 on this 17" monitor even though I could run 1152 (or whatever the # was) perfectly fine.

depends what you're doing - I could easily make use of twice the 1600 by 1200 resolution. I find 1600x1200 just too cramped to get a lot of work done. True I do a lot of audio editing and things so I'm used to multiple high res monitors on my desktop computer

Me peronally? No. My activities on my laptop are pretty much these:

Office Applications (Word, Excel)
Internet and Email
Instant Messanging
Listening to MP3s

On a 13.3" TFT, 1024x768 is perfect - unless I'm in front of a 15"+ TFT, higher resolutions look a bit too small to me.

Even with basic office tasks... If I can't type in MS Word, Surf the Web, and be chatting in some AIM windows all visible concurrently then I get mad. 1600x1200 is the way to go.

As for 15" being too small, its rock steady and crystal clear on an LCD

CRT's drive me nuts now with their flicker and blurriness (even at 85Hz)

My grandmother who can't read the text on my 19" CRT at 1600 by 1200 can read it on my notebook LCD screen 15" at 1600 by 1200.

My Inspiron is 1400x1050x15". It's the most beautiful LCD you've ever seen. The image quality is so good that everything is real easy to read even though it's a little small.

Depends on the user. I'd be fine with 1024X768 on a lap top...at least for the first month.

IBM has a 1800x1200 15" TFT! That must look freaking incredible! Get all the resolution you can in a TFT. If the text looks too small to read comfortably, have your eyes checked! You may be farsighted! If you game just be sure the video adapter can keep up with the native resolution. Of course interpolation doesn't take its toll on games nearly as bad as text. If the interpolation is done well, it may even smooth some of the jaggies out--penalty free AA if you will!

My Inspiron 8000 is 1400x1050 (14"). Would love to have the 15" 1600x1200, but the extra cost was substantial.

Then again, I'm using VB, where desktop space is at a premium.

For regular use, 1024x768 is just fine.

I use Dell Inspiron 8000 with 1400x1050 G2Go. The screen is sweeeet.

Yes! Definitly! I use every single pixle of the space my SXGA+ LCD gives me (1400x1050) I don't think I'd like using 1600x1200 on a 15" screen...everything would be way too small, but I do love viewing multiple documents without having to scroll around within them a lot...and with my database class at school, I love having all of the tables I need to pull information from on the screen all the time. I just wish my desktop moniter supported a higher res

For me, No.

I was interested in economy for my Inspiron 4100 as well as reasonable graphics. The Radeon Mobility can play the newest games - Serious Sam, SE, RtCW, Max Payne - at desktop resolution (details at 'mid', of course) - yet text is perfectly clear for me. Of course, I am running a 14.1" TFT.

For the last 7 weeks I have been in Hawaii with my notebook as my only computer and I am completely satisfied.

I was thinking about getting the 4100 with SVGA+ 14" screen, instead of the big and bulky 8100 UXGA 15" (im gonna need portability from the laptop). Am i making the right decision?

Yes. I need to replace my Sony with a Dell w/UXGA screen. Then I'll attach an external 19" monitor to run 1600x1200 as a secondary monitor.

Can never get enough desk space.

Hmm.. I don't see how much difference .9" would make. I personally wouldn't mind a 14.1" UXGA LCD screen, but then I never had first-hand experience with it. I only tried a 14.1" SXGA+.

I've got a compaq presario 1700T with the 14" 1024x768 and its great.

If you can afford a laptop with a higher resolution (like the dell 8100 with 64mb vid.. drooooooool..) then definetly go for it..

but 1024 is definetly fine for laptops.
