I'm going on a road trip this up-coming weekend (going to a wedding in upstate/middle-of-nowhere NY on sunday, but in a round-about way that takes me from NYC down to the Jersey Shore, out to amish country in PA, and then finally up to upstate NY) and I'm getting a rental car for the drive because I don't feel like putting the miles on my own car... but I heard that if you rent a car and pay by CC, you don't need to buy insurance for the rental since the credit card company will cover it.

true or not? or is it only with amex or something?

Frequently, getting the insurance will replace the CC insurance. Check the terms of your card to verify it is provided by your card.

Also - a lot of car insurance companies will cover you. This can be done two ways - some will cover you automatically - other times you simply have to call them and ask. My auto insurance will cover me for 7 days a year for free on rental cars
