do you need a hdtv mini satellite to get hdtv?

What's your service? DirecTV? DISH? ExpressVu?

DISH you'll need an extra dish to point to 61.5 (East/Midwest/South) or 148 (West coast). And, you'll need the DISH 6000 receiver.

Others...dunno.

You'll need the DISH 6000 and if you want to tune OTA DTV broadcasts, you'll need the 8VSB add-in module. And, if you want Discovery HD and any future add'l HD channels, you'll need the new add-in module for the DISH 6000 to support those new channels.

check out Allsat.com or DishKing.com for info/prices.

Also, you'll need a new dish to point to the 148 satellite (since you're on the west coast). Any old standard 18" dish will work. I used a DirecTV dish I picked up at Best Buy for about $20. DISH will charge you the $4.99/mo. extra receiver charge, too.

Supposedly, late this year, DISH has a new SuperDish coming out but who knows if that will come out by then or if it will get delayed...

I am still really confused about all this hdtv stuff? can somebody explain a little more what I need and why?

thank you

For Directv you will need an elliptical dish with a 3 prong LNB, a HDTV receiver (try Samsung or Hughes) and a TV with built in monitor. If your TV doesn't have the built-in monitor, you will have to also get a converter. Now this will get you HDNet, DiscoveryHD, ESPNHD (July 1, will be part of a subscription), HBOHD (must subcribe), ShowtimeHD (must subsribe) and pay per movies in HD. For local HD channels, you will need a seperate antenna to pick up those channels. Because of this I recommend the Samsung TS160 receiver. That way you can hook both the dish and the antenna up to the receiver and let it do the switching (only need one remote). Most other HD receivers do not have the antenna hookup, therefore you will need to connect the antenna up to the back of the TV (you need to use two remotes: one for HD over the dish, one for HD from the antenna).

does it matter what recevier I use will all receivers work with dish network?

Only receivers sold by DISH Network will work with DISH. Check their website for model info. DirecTV has many mfrs producing receivers for their service, though.

For Dish, it has to be a Dish HDTV-capable receiver.

For DirecTV, it has to be a DirecTV logo'd HDTV-capable receiver.

The bands are basically the same, but the encoding of the signal is different, and they use different conditional access systems.

Any UHF antenna will get HDTV signals provided your local stations are broadcasting hdtv to begin with.
