Do you mix languages?

No, I'm not talking about programming languages, although I'm sure many of us are guilty of that too. I'm talking about spoken and written languages like Spanish or German. Being of German heritage I know some german (semi-fluent in it. Used to be a lot more though. 🙁) and I know some fairly fluent spanish from being around so many hispanics where I live (our community is 30% hispanic, 50% german, 20% everyone else) so I'm fairly decent with both languages. One thing I do find myself doing from time to time is actually mixing languages when I talk. Like asking someone something in German for no good reason. Or even spanish. I did that with my boss one time. Walked up and asked him about when we were going to get paid and how much and I did it in spanish. He just looked at me and said "What the he** did you just say?" 😀

Anyone else who's bi-lingual do this? Not sure how many ATOT'ers are able to speak more than one language.

And since we're on the subject of languages and I know this is gonna come up too, what about those of you who program? Ever mixed up your Perl with your C++?? 😀
 
My daily conversation is a mix of gibberish, korean, italian, and english.

I haven't screwed up perl and C++ yet, but I've programmed and perl and been tempted sometimes to use the php include() and require() functionality.
 
My wife knows 4 languages, and even though she's teaching me one of them right now... she'll still switch to a different one and throw me for a loop.

Of course, I think she does it on purpose. 😉
 
Sometimes I'll mix in some C syntax when I take notes and I'll use parenthasies and logical operators so I don't get myself confused with phrases like: If A or B and C then...
 
I do that a lot. Even more so w/ my mother.

I would speak a mixture of English and Mandarin (and a little bit of Taiwanese) when talking with her. We've even been known to add in a little Japanese to spice things up. Heh...
 
kind of. I origionally was born in belarus so i speak russian but i came here when i was around 9 or 10 so english is my first language, if i try speaking russian i sometimes will switch to english if i don't remmber the word in russian.
 
Wow, that's cool. We've got one guy who works with us who hails from Russia. His english is awesome until he's had too much to drink. Then all he does is sputter russian all the rest of the night until he sobers up. 🙂
 
yea you should go to singapore.... people mix english, mandarin, cantonese, and taiwanese all the time (sometimes even malay)
 
Sure, I speak Spanglish all the time! And my natural inclination is to accent the second syllable of most words, so I end up mangling my English frequently. I cuss in Spanish instead of English, too.

The sad thing is that I am not very fluent in Spanish. My parents are, though.

i mix english and Hindi, even though I have lived in america all my life, and english is my first language
