I picked up the book "meditation for dummies". A great read, so far I'm half way through it. My impressions of "mindful" meditation is that its really good for you. I have found that even though I'm a n00b at meditation, it has already had some positive effects. I am less anxious, more alert during the day, and more patient. I don't think I'll be shaving my head any time soon and joining the monestary, but was wondering if anyone else has an impression on this topic.
