do you lose performance when you allow index service on xp?

you lose performance since it's making a index of all files (or the ones with that attribute checked)
You obviously tax the CPU less when searching for files. So for heavy (I mean really heavy) searching
it'll speed things up. Otherwise I turn it off to increase performance. It reminds too much of that Find Fast with Office97.
