I'm curious to know how many people stayed near their parents (either same city or within driving distance) after starting their career. I'm kinda coping with this dilemma right now as I'd like to be near my parents, but they live in a part of the country I don't enjoy (Milwaukee, WI). Of course they ask me to find a job there every single time I go to visit.

There are few things more beneficial in life than moving as far away as possible from your parents and childhood home. Without doing that you never become a truly independent individual.

I dunno man, I've done that...I'm definitely far away from my childhood home and all. But sometimes I just feel like none of the relationships with people I form out here will ever compare to the ones I have with my parents. They were never controlling or bossy to the point where I wanted to be out of the house really badly. They gave me all the independence and space I needed.

what you call a dilemma never even occured to me. i always lived where i wanted to be; whether it was close to them or distant really didn't enter into my thoughts.

I agree that moving away from your parents will give your the chance to grow independant, but that doesn't alwasy justify doing it. I live about an hour from my dad and 5 minutes from my mother, though I rarely see them. I don't think that I have spoken to my dad since Christmas day. I can't even remember the last time I saw him :(. I speak with my mother about every other day, but I don't get to see her more than once per week because of her intense working schedule (she's the photodouble for Roma Downey on Touched by an Angel, so it's 14-15 hour days all week).

You took the words right out of my mouth. The best thing my wife and I did was move from Iowa to Florida as soon as she graduated from college. It made her a whole new person. We were there for about 4 years, then moved to Ohio for a year, now we are back in Iowa a couple of hours from our parents. My wife has to travel with her new job. This would be extremely hard on her had we not moved away for a while. We'll be here for a while, but we have had problems simply because we live so close to family. No matter how much you love your family, it's good to be independant. We plan to move out of state again in a few years.

right now i'm only in college, but i am 90-120 minutes away (depending on traffic).
when i am done with college i am not sure where i will end up, but i could be going south (maryland/dc area), which would be 10-12 hours away from my parents.

We live 3/4 mile from my wife's sister, about 1.5 miles from her parents, and about 45 minutes from my parents.

I get to see her entire family 4-5 times a week. Which isn't too bad, usually, we do get free meals out of it 1-2 times a week.

Now, if they were only more open to babysitting. You've got to beg and plead with them before they'll sit for us.

man I really envy those of you who are nearby your parents and have a spouse with parents nearby as well. I think thats really good for the kids and it's nice to have that additional emotional support. Unfortunately I don't think that will ever possible for me :(

I live with my parents, but thats only because the college I go to is like 15 minutes away from their house, and I am only in first year so it doesn't really matter where I am.

you have to figure out what is best for you and yours. three of my sisters (the fourth lives about 3 hours drive away) and my brother live within 30 minutes of my mom and dad. they are in Minnesota, i am in Arizona. The move was something i just had to do. i needed that independence. i was the baby of the family and mom was very conflicted about me leaving. i miss all my family very much but i had to move and try something different. i didn't want to end up like my siblings or parents (working in factory jobs - living in MN all their lives - not experiencing something different) i guess one of my sister's is kinda like me though...she is working as a nurse and is planning on moving to WA. i guess the bottom line is, do what is right for you. if you think you should be with your parents, move home. if you think that it is better only visiting them once in a while or you can put up with only visiting them once in a while, stay moved away. evaluate what would be best emotionally, professionally, and physically. of course, this is all my $.02
