My wife has got me listening to some country, although I will not listen to any women country singers. I like some, Brad paisley, George Straight, Alan Jackson etc.

A little.

Mostly things like The River by Garth Brooks and that song "I wish somehow I didn't know now what I didn't know then."

For the most part though, I can't stand the whole "White trash empowerment" theme that some country songs seem to have now.

If Norah Jones is considered country, then I do, otherwise no.

I love her Feels Like Home album.

Only Americana types and Texas and alt. Country. James McMurtry, Lyle Lovett, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Steve Earle all can rock hard, and write good songs too.

Well, I liked the Cold Mountain soundtrack. And just a couple of songs here and there by Clint Black, Marshall Tucker Band etc.

 for Lyle Lovett and Steve Earle. I also like a fair amount of Cowboy Junkies material.

I like bits and pieces of more trad country, including a few songs by Gary Allan, a couple by Tift Merritt, Dolly Parton's cover of "Shine" with the Nickel Creek hobbits.

Despite growing up in the South and being a parrothead (even though Buffett's older stuff is clearly country-based) I didn't listen to it of my own accord for the longest time. I guess it's just the typical anti-establishment sentiment of youth.

I started to appreciate it more in college (country and blues are by far the best background sound for pool halls and a lot of dive bars.) Now I actually listen to it fairly regularly, although it's still well below 50% of my music listening time. With pop and rock being so hip-hop/rhythm based these days, it's one of the few mainstream genres left where melodies actually drive the music.

Ryan Adams' (not Bryan) CD's with The Cardinals, "Cold Roses" and "Jacksonville City Nights" from last year are both gorgeous and well written, check them out. His old band Whiskeytown put out several solid alt-country albums back in the 90's.

I won't touch 95% of the ****** that gets play on CMT with a ten foot pole...I loathe pop-Country
