Just starting to storm in St. Louis, so I'm sitting out in our covered porch watching the rain hit our above ground pool.

Ahhh....relaxing

I absolutely love a good thunderstorm. I have even been found to foolishly be outside in the midst of one. I have a screen porch on the back of my house where I can sit in the middle of one and really enjoy it, at least until the thunder and lightning are simultaneous, at which point I duck back inside.

When I lived in Amarillo, I would follow them across the Panhandle. Not really storm chasing in the sense that I just got behind the storms and follow them. Out there, there are almost no trees and the terrain is flat, you get some amazing views.

There's a gentle rain going on now. Very relaxing.

I do like to watch lightning storms from a distance too. One of the best ones i've seen was 20+ years ago. The storm was ~100 miles away & i watched that for nearly 2 hours as it slowly moved along.
Not only was there cloud-to-ground but some amazing cloud-to-cloud lightning.
The reason i know how far away it was one of the guys i worked with at the time lived in Warren/Youngstown Ohio area & said it was a hell of a storm.
I watched it under starry skies.

The best one i've seen was about 5-6 years ago on the 4th of July. Again, it was a nice starry night but as i was going home from my parents i noticed some lightning in the distance so i parked myself where i had a good view to the North.
Most of the good strikes were cloud-to-ground in this one but this was the only time i've ever seen Sprites/Jets above the clouds. Now that was awesome!
And as it was the 4th of July i also got to see fireworks people were setting off from their various parties.
This storm was ~40/50 miles away over Lake Erie.

I want my future bedroom to have a glass (sloped..I'm in MN) ceiling with the glass that can change from black to clear electronically, just so I can watch thunderstorms while laying in bed and going to sleep.

I love it. Also watching a nice nasty front come in. A big roiling green one, that sucks all the air towards it as it approaches. Pretty badass.

I love thunderstorms, especially when there's lot of wind, and you see totally random stuff end up in your yard.

The best yet is this one storm and a whole tent was flying accross the back yard, probably about 15 feet high.

Then the power goes out, and it makes it that much more exciting.

We don't get good thunderstorms like the south though, and we only get them in summer. That said, blizzards are fun to watch too. More fun to drive in.

I LOVE thunderstorms...it's something that we rarely get here in NorCal.

I DO NOT however like working in them.

In 30+ years of crane operating, I've had the crane boom struck by lightning twice.

It's pretty awesome (and scary as hell) to see it happen. :D

It sure does fuck a crane up for a while though...

I love em. Last summer was probably the best thunderstorm season I've ever lived through. It seemed like there was almost at least 1 a week here in the north east.

I made a comment about every storm going around us - I'd watch the big red splotch on the doppler radar split into two red splotches, one passing to the north and the other to the south of us. I jokingly made a theory about lacking golf courses to attract lightning. The following week, my neighbor's tree and electric fence (across the street) were hit. We were out of town for that one. The following week, lightning hit with 150 feet or so of our house 3 separate times during one storm. After one hit along the tree line behind the barn, I was going to make a dash for the barn to check on the animals. As I stood on the porch, I heard the sound of ionized air streaming. BAM! Lightning hit the tree across the street again.

Considering tornadoes are going on real close and they're coming I'm going to be sitting outside enjoying the show. It's even more fun to watch them come in.
