Do you like thunderstorms?

They are forecasting strong thunderstorms for my area on Saturday and Saturday night, which we have not had in quite some time. Personally I love thunderstorms. The stronger the better (as long as no one gets hurt). Heavy rain, strong wind, lightning. I don't think I could live in a place that didn't get thunderstorms at least a couple times a month. I've always been a weather buff.

What about you?

put up a kite. with a steel wire. and hold it.

I do like thunderstorms. Been through some crazy ones. Even drove through thunder snow... An experience I would not wish on anyone.

I used to like them more. I've gotten a little gun shy lately. The weather's gone to hell, and we've had some weird stuff happening around here. Twice this year I had to do substantial cleanup. Once after a ground effect wind condition, and once after a tornado.

I love them as well. I used to live in a tropical country with severe thunderstorms almost every week. I loved it. I remember playing soccer during a thunderstorm on several occasions. The thunderstorms we get in the northeast are nothing compared to a tropical thunderstorm.

Chicago has thunderstorms? I figured you were in tornado alley where we have real thunderstorms. It's always more fun when the sky looks evil and you have to wonder if it's going to form a tornado.

Chicago gets a lot of thunderstorms, especially in the spring and summer months. Pretty big ones too, with large hail and 70+ mph winds. They seem to be getting stronger each year...We get tornadoes here too, though they don't usually make it into heavily populated areas.

They are the one east coast weather feature that I missed when I moved back to Portland. The unbelievable downpour and raging thunder/lightning is awe-inspiring as long as you aren't stuck out in it.

I like them, they're just too rare around here (TX).

I really enjoy getting out on the covered porch and watching it brew up. You get the gusty wind, then you can smell the rain coming. A few drops, then the noise picks up as the drops get bigger and come faster. :)

We get thundersnow occasionally around here. It's pretty cool - as long as you don't have to drive in it.

Chicago metro area.

This was Pennsylvania near NY border, a hilly region with 2 lane each way on split levels. Either you stay on the lane or you hit the mountain side or you roll off the slope. We stuck to the tail of a tractor trailer doing 120km/h.... thinking was they clear the road.

when we got to customs at buffalo, the guy looked at our faces (and the car) and just waved us through after checking id.

this was noon and we saw the dark cloud ahead in the mountain range. should have stopped. While in it, it was like midnight.

IL can get some terrible storms. Two years ago my home town was half destroyed by an F3 that came through. There were actually two tornadoes that hit that night. We've been so dry this year that their simply isn't enough moisture in the air to produce some really wicked storms.

I'm in central IL which is a bit more prone to tornadoes than the northern part of the state. We definitely get storms that look like pure sinister evil rolling in. When it turns yellow outside you know something bad is brewing.

Living in California, I had seen thunderstorms.
The Army sent me to Oklahoma and I saw what thunderstorms are REALLY like. Huge difference.

They are entertaining. I lived in California for most of my life so didn't really see any major ones. Now I live in NC, and during the summer major thunderstorms happen many times per week often. I've gotten used to it, but one of my dogs is petrified of them so it gets to be a chore dealing with her. Only time I really don't like them is when they happen when I'm trying to sleep. They can be super loud and keep you up.

assuming I'm indoors, a good storm is cool every once in awhile.

not so much if I've got to drive or walk through it, though.

When I worked on the highways, the nastier it was the more I wanted to be in it.

That's something I miss being in California. We rarely get thunderstorms here, and the ones we do get are pretty puny.

Of course, being a crane operator most of my life, I wasn't too happy to see them pop up while I was working...I had the boom of the crane hit twice by lightning while I was working. o_O
Fortunately, in neither incident was anyone holding on to the load or standing close to the rig...but both times ended our work day as the crane had to be inspected and minor repairs made.

I had to shovel out a car during thunder snow once. Eeerie.

I like thunderstorms as long as I'm inside. Being on a sailboat during one is pretty scary.

I enjoy them, except when when the garage of the neighbors behind my house was hit by lightning when I was standing outdoors working in my garden 20 yards away. Or, when I was watching the lightning from my porch and the tree directly across the street was hit by lightning.

And, I was 1 1/2 miles from the nearest road one chilly morning on opening day of gun season for deer, having hiked in before the break of dawn. Red sky in morning... take warning! Thundersnow hit at about 9 or 10 am. That kind of sucked.

Yup, it's always a sigh of relief when we finally do get rain.

I remember growing up 30 miles outside of town and just sitting on the porch. I could see for miles and it was always amazing getting to see all of the lightning shoot across the land.

For those of you that mentioned thundersnow, what was so crazy about it? I've been through lots of stuff, tornadoes, blizzards, monsoons, lightning strikes close enough that the sound and the flash hit simultaneously, but, so far, I've never seen thundersnow. What about it left such a big impression on you?

It's just very weird to have Thunder + Lighting + Snow. Not a common combination of events.
