Do you leave your battery in while your laptop is plugged in?

So I want to be able to maintain my battery life as much as I can, and was told that keeping the battery warm will decrease its life expectancy so disconnecting it while it's in use is the best way to do so.

Is it though, should I constantly leave it disconnected? The only annoyance is taking it in and out when I need to be portable with it, or if it's out my plug accidentally gets disconnected and my computer turns off as a result which is pretty annoying..

Thoughts?

It'll be cheaper to buy a new battery then to waste time fiddling with it.

mine gets disconnected accidentally sometimes (wires ftl) and I don't want it turning off when it does.

Exactly. I can't imagine bothering to pull it out all the time (not to mention that it would interfere with my Macbook's hard-earned symmetry!).

Yes. This is 98% of the time.

Have heard that the battery should be "run down" occassionally - but this rarely happens.

Lithium Ion batteries like to be stored with a moderate charge at a cool temp. If you're going to be leaving your laptop on & plugged in for weeks on end, you may want to consider running it down a bit & taking it out. A friend of mine had a defective power button until he got it fixed a year later. He left his battery in the whole time, and now it doesn't hold a charge. Never got used, just stored at a full charge & elevated temps.

Contrast this with a laptop I received that had sat in a drawer for many years (it's a 100mhz pentium with 16mb ram). Since it got stored in a cool place (basement) at a moderate charge, the lithium ion battery is almost 100% perfect, and holds a 2 hour charge, about what the manual says it will last for.

IMHO, though, if you're going to be on & off AC power, it's probably not worth your time. Just plan to purchase a new battery a few months earlier than you otherwise would have.

This is true for NiMH and even more so for NiCads, but not Lithium-Ion. Apple's page is pretty informative
