My three ID cards are in my wallet, the rest of the important documents are in a binder on my shelf (I also have hi-res scans of them, they come handy when I need to fax a copy).

Good reason to rent a bank safety deposit box.

Don't forget your other important documents: your insurance policies (home, life, etc), your deed(s), a copy of your will, information about any bank, money market, IRA or brokerage accounts you may have...

Having everything in one secure location will make it a little easier to pick up the pieces following a disaster. It will also make things easier on your relatives should you die unexpectedly.

I can't find my most recent social security card (the one with the name I use now), but I do know where the original one is... and my birth certificate and passport and... hmm. marriage license? why would I ever need that? well.. er.. no, actually I don't have any idea where that is, but I guess it's either in the file cabinet or in the box with the wedding album.. it's been more than 25 years since I saw that. immunization record.. they're just gonna have to take my word for the fact that I've been immunized (the doctors that had those records are probably dead!) for just about everything I haven't already had and could probably use a tetanus booster. titles to the cars, I can find those.. the kids birth certificates and immunization records and social security cards and the younger one's passport (the older one is in london, hers is with her). close enough?

actually.. there is one important paper I can't find.. the one that proves I paid the property tax on my car. it's missing. can find the ones for the other cars but not that one.. and the sticker is missing too.. don't know why.. my guess is my husband neglected to put it ON the car, but he swears he di.. can't remember. :p can't get replacement sticker without proof I paid the taxes, so there's a trip to the county office buillding in my near future.

Since I just took the ASVAB I know exactly where my life (the documents more or less amount to my entire life) is...

In a manila envelope on my bookcase, I really should invest in one of those document safes

Birth certificate - MIA
Passport - MIA

Don't really need either anytime soon but I should probably look for them one day.

I do know where my drivers license and SSN card are

everything that i might ever need has been scanned and recorded on CDRs... at least two copies...

last count almost 9,000 pages

i routinely scan stuff and put it on CDs... so other than a drawerful of really critical stuff, i have no paper files whatsoever
