Do you know what the purpose of allowance is?

I have an idea what the purpose of an allowance is. Do you think an allowance loses it's purpose if you give it to the kid with out having them work? I want to see what are some answers people make on this forum. Personally I think it's worth it to give a child an allowance.

I think you should only give children an allowance if they help out around the house with chores. Otherwise, why should you reward laziness?

Edit: and of course, you can't forget that it teaches youngsters how to manage their money.

It's 2 fold. An allowance is also a helpful tool to help teach kids how to manage money at a young age.

Allowances are for yuppie kids who rarely do anything to deserve it, and result in a demanding kid who feels he is owed something for putting out little to nothing in return.

Allowance is fine as long as the child pulls his or her own weight within the family. Children should not get an allowance because they help out around the house... that is just something that they should do as part of the family. They should get an allowance to learn how to manage money properly, and the allowance should not be large at all. They should be given a low amount, then if they want more, they can do extra work outside of their family duties.

In my house, my brother and I were paid an allowance in exchange for doing a set of regular chores, which included cleaning the house every week during the summer, cleaning the dishes, emptying the trash, keeping our rooms tidy, doing yardwork when required and basically anything else our parents asked for.

EDIT: It's a good way to teach fiscal responsibility. Our allowance wasn't particularly large. When we got older and got jobs, we stopped earning an allowance, but we continued to do the same chores.

My kids had their daily/weekly chores. I always told them, finish ALL your chores, , and they could get their allowance. Want to earn MORE? I have a list of things you can do, and the price I'll pay is beside each item"...no argument, no discussion. If I (or my wife) had to do their chores, they got docked...severely.

Awww, thats too bad. If you read my threads more indepth, you'd know that I don't have my own dedicated internet access due to me being a 'good kid'. I'm sharing my dad's internet connection which is something he needs so I doubt he'd cancel that.

I'm hardly spoiled. It's ironic that when ever I argue with my dad about his daughters+wife wasting money, he then says "I give you what ever you want"...

K, thats great dad, considering that I don't ask very much from you, that's kind of meaningless. Is the fact that you 'give me what ever I want' give the girls a license to waste money? I don't care if they spend money too much, but when you got through 10 portable phones in 4 years, when I've got one from '98 that I still use and have yet to change the battery on, there is obviously something seriously wrong here. I tried suggesting that my mom+sister get regular portables and get a headphone but instead would rather spend $100 on each phone only to break it in a short time, either due to negligence or it being crappy quality.

Nonetheless, this is completely and utterly off topic. Thanks finch, for veering this topic off course! :p

Do you seriously not call anyone, which lets you use a battery for upwards of 8 years? You must have NO friends :).

If you knew anything about batteries kid, you'd know that they wear out no matter how often you use them. I bought a battery for my sony vaio only 2 years ago and the battery is practically gone now. I don't use the phone very often as I'd rather be a normal guy and hang out with them and do ****** then be a girl and talk on the phone for hours on end.

i think you still should give them one no matter what because it teaches htem the value of a dollar. This is how much they get. Use it as they wish, but they arent getting anymore. They will eventually learn what the right thing to do is.

Kids should be helping around the house Allowance or not. Allowance is mostly just to provide some experience with money and freedom to get something important for the kid. Providing Bonusses for doing extra doesn't hurt though, especially as they get older and will soon be enetering the work force.

my siblings and i were given chores and an allowance. if we didnt do chores, we didnt get an allowance. the parents bought clothing and such but no gifts outside of birthdays/christmas, so if we wanted something, we had to save for it.

i got the point, and always had a savings account and cash on hand.

my sister did not, and often asked to borrow money from me, which id allow about the 1 time in 5 shed agree to pay me an extra fee on top of it, for having to put up with her.

my parents always took my allowance out of me in work around the house/yard.

I figure I probably made half minimum wage or something like that.

I didn't have any meaningful amount of money until I got a job.

I got a meager allowance, allowing me to buy food in school. I saved with all of my poor little heart until I raised $80 for that new piece of computer hardware, and my dad would get pissed because I spent so much money. Moral of the story: Steal stuff.
