Do you know what an iPod is?

I thought with all the advertising that everybody and their mom would know what an iPod is, especially in the Silicon Valley. I went to 24 hour fitness last night and the guy working the front desk last night was like "what's that?" like he'd never seen an iPod before.

I said, "you know those commericals were there's a shadow of dancing holding this white brick looking thing?"
"uh.. nope."
"oh... (you must live under a rock)."

Odd.. for me at least.

A friend of mine didn't know what Tivo was up until about a month ago. :disgust:

No kidding. We were watching TV one day and he was like "they should invent something where you can record whatever you want on like a disk or something."

I looked at him completely deadpanned and said "They did. It's called Tivo."

I own one, so, yes. I have never seen a commercial for them, though, since I also own a replayTV, and don't have to sit through commercials. :)

not this again... sigh

In response to this my brother Van and I made the short film "iPod's Dirty Secret" After we finished production of the film, but not necessarily in response to it, Apple began offerring a battery replacement program for the ipod for a fee of $99 and an extended warranty for the ipod for $59.

We think Apple's new policy is fair. Our movie is a documentation of our experience.

I know what an iPod is, but I've never seen one in person. So if someone walked in holding it, I'd probably ask what he/she has. Asking what it is does not mean you do not know about it.

Think of it like this. Someone comes to your desk and slams down a spleen. Sure you know what a spleen is, but would you recognize it immediately if someone is carrying one around in their hands?

nope this guy didn't even know what an iPod was. I figured if you worked at a gym in the silicon valley you'd see a dozen of these on a daily basis.

edit for dullard's edit: but they don't have commericals for spleens, nor do people carry their spleen around at the gym. ;)

THat's actually pretty true. My g/f is pretty tech savvy -- and at least knows a lot of tech trends simply from living in Santa Clara for a few years, despite being far from a geek.

I'm pretty sick right now (cold) so my mind is thinking in strange ways. That was the first example that I thought of where most people know what it is but won't be able to recognize it on first sight. I have no idea why I thought of a spleen.

Yeah, and people in computer science classes get confused when I open up an Apple notebook. "Is that an Apple?", "Does that have a Pentium 4 in it?", "What version of Linux is that?" etc.
