I just read about an application/service, called eWatch, that Corporations are using to bring PR to bulletin board levels.

<< How does it work? Partly, eWatch says, through a little info-cleansing. "We can neutralize the information appearing online, identifying the perpetrators behind uncomplimentary postings and rogue Web sites," the company's online promo material says. Then, eWatch can "remove offending messages from where they appear in cyberspace." >>

<< "We can post back to the message boards where original postings appeared to give our side of the story, provide clarification, or debunk it," the eWatch materials go on to say. "We can e-mail directly those we think were affected by the incident." >>

So if you say something bad about lets say "nVIDIA" and you quickly receive a lotta heat from people you don't know, how do you know for sure that the person attacking you is JonnyUT or JonnyPR.

It would be good if boards like this could identify this service and treat their clients just like dealers who post in the HotDeals forum.

"The paranoyd will survive", now I'm wondering if I'm going to be neutralized by posting this :p

Your accusations demand that I expose the Recent troubling developments which prompt me to revisit a subject I've discussed in the past: Councilmember Wounded W Wallet, Esq. and his plan to raise extortionate demands. In the first place, he should think about how his exegeses lead impolitic craven slimeballs to revive the ruinous excess of a bygone era to bounce and blow amidst the ruinous excess of the present era. If Councilmember Wallet doesn't want to think that hard, perhaps he should just keep quiet. He can't possibly believe that anonymity is a viable and vital objective for our nation's anonymous institutions. He's stupid, but he's not that stupid. In the past, when I complained that Councilmember Wallet was attempting to misdirect our efforts into fighting each other rather than into understanding the nature and endurance of stupid absolutism, I was told that I was just being obtrusive. But nowadays, people realize that I do not find conjectures that are doctrinaire, callous, and rash to be "funny". Maybe I lack a sense of humor, but if Fate desired that he make a correct application of what he had read about authoritarianism, it would have to indicate title and page number, since the unenlightened fool would otherwise never in all his life find the correct place. But since Fate does not do this, a person who wants to get ahead should try to understand the long-range consequences of his/her smear tactics. Councilmember Wallet has never had that faculty. He always does what he wants to do at the moment and figures he'll be able to lie himself out of any problems that arise. Since most people oppose Councilmember Wallet's sullen expostulations, he has had to ridicule the accomplishments of generations of great men and women using every hideous means imaginable. I believe that Councilmember Wallet's opinion is a lazy cop-out. Some people might object to that claim, and if they do, my response is: Honor means nothing to Councilmember Wallet. Principles mean nothing to Councilmember Wallet. All he cares about is how to distort the facts.

What is happening between his cronies and us is not a debate. It is not a friendly disagreement between enlightened people. It is a worthless attack on our most cherished institutions. What he fails to mention in his grievances is actually quite telling. For example, did you know that he wants to use psychological tools to trick us into doing whatever choleric mischievous antagonists require of us? Or that his lackeys explain everything through the lens of his logorrheic and ideologically-loaded publications? As we organize our campaigns against the worst kinds of gormless revolting-types there are and formulate responses to their rhetoric, it is critical that we provide some balance to Councilmember Wallet's one-sided antics.

This makes me fearful that I might someday find myself in the crosshairs of Councilmember Wallet's judgemental proposed social programs. (To be honest, though, it wouldn't be the first time.) Councilmember Wallet truly believes that he is a bearer and agent of the Creator's purpose. It is just such ignorant megalomania, raucous egoism, and intellectual aberrancy that stirs Councilmember Wallet to produce nothing but filth. A final note: Councilmember Wounded W Wallet, Esq.'s expedients epitomize all that is jackbooted in the world.

we know where you live

After reading this letter, you will never again be able to trust Atty. Slacker, and you will see with crystal clarity the way that he has
made a big mistake. I want to share this with you because I wouldn't put it past him to desecrate personal religious objects. So don't
feed me any baloney about how profits come before people. That's just not true. Soporific yawping grizzlers thrive on hatred rather
than love. The denial of this fact only proves the effrontery, and also the stupidity, of cantankerous grungy boneheads. This is far
from all I have to say on the topic, but it's certainly enough for now. Just remember one thing: Atty. Slacker's belief systems command
as much respect as the tales in the supermarket tabloids.

[/b]Seee, I told you so!![/b]

There is no reason not to ban a produt like that.

Goes along great with my signature of the day.

There's just one kind of man that you can trust. That's a dead man and a beloved patriot like me. Move: "Gunfight at Red Sands" Song: "A beloved patriot Like Me"

That's not the only service that monitors internet BBS's. If you think that it is just random users that come in and flame products or post good news about products, then you are very naive.

Sounds pretty illegal to me, especailly if they go around deleting messages on BBSes. Personally I don't think they can do half of what they say they can.

No, they can't. There's certainly no way they can delete a message on a server they don't run. It's impossible and illegal. And it's doubtful that knowledgable members here at AnandTech or other respected tech forums would allow moronic PR speak from posters appearing out of the blue. We would just refute their claims and be on our way.

I say, bring it on.

One way that they can obtain information regarding a poster is to PAY/BUY the info from someone who has access to it, like the moderator/administrator of the BBS/ISP. Since eWatch will simply pass the cost (maybe even add a margin to it) to the client, it can potentially offer whatever it will take to get the info.

The example mentioned in the article deals with organizing a sick out on the air transportation which has a national (perhaps even international) effect. The unmentioned forum/isp administrators probably were convinced that the illegal act (definitely disastrous) of it's member/user should not be tolerated & cooperated with eWatch at the time.
