Do you know of any instant messaging software for company LANs?

For security issues, I'd rather not have everyone send out information to the internet and back (security issues, company info, blah blah). Does anybody know of any IM software that you can run locally and have one machine dedicated as a host?

If you are using windows..won't the winpop application which is included standard with windows fulfill your need? I have not used it much so it may not have all the functionallity you need. as an alternative, you could always use something like sametime connect from lotus, and set up your own messaging server withing your network. Not sure how much that will cost though. But it WILL work, and it looks and feels much like AOL instant messenger

I tried winpopup for the first time just a couple of weeks ago, after having a home LAN for about 3 years. Anyway it's really difficult and annoying to use. Try something else

I don't know how complex of a messenger you are looking for but we use one called Lan-Mail that works well for us. It is a fairly simple program and very easy to setup, I know I was able to do it at work! :)

Has a variety of alerts etc.

I would highly recommend using Exchange 2000 Server for your messaging software, that is if you can afford it, it can be over $1,000.

super cheap way to go (you may already have the software pre-installed) is to use netmeeting (in windows enviroment). works great on LAN, you don't have to have video or audio, has a text mode you can invoke (like IM) you can setup icons to instantly connect to anyone you want on the lan. all you need is to enter the user name of the computer you wish to contact.

We have used lotus notes.. only use it for email now.

We also used to use the Corporate ICQ.

Now we only use Epop. Works great.
