Do any of you keep a journal and if so why? I started writing in one two years ago I only write in it once every month or so as events happen in the world and in my life. I hope someday my children will have it and see how things were from their fathers perspective.

you wouldn't have to write much each day. "trolled on ATOT most of the day. good night journal!"

The only journal I keep is of all emails coming in and out of my email server. I do it so I can watch what all my users are doing.

As for an actual journal, a friend of mine convinced me to try it out, I did for about three days, and just gave it up because I was too lazy to write that I played WOW for three hours today before I cried myself to sleep because I don't have any real friends... Stupid journal.

I've been keeping a journal since I was about 8 years old. It's very weird to go back and read stuff that I wrote when I was younger---I have changed a LOT, more than I am capable of remembering, definitely more than I would ever admit.

For the re-discovery alone, journaling is worth it. It keeps me humble, in a way---it is both embarrassing and sobering to read my own thoughts that I now no longer recognize. Makes you wonder if the world would be different if people realized how fallible they are.

Not anymore. For most of my 30+ years working construction, I kept a detailed time book/journal of my daily work activities and such. Came in very handy when it came to pay disputes, travel records for expenses, and so forth.
Never figured anyone would give a damn about my ho-hum daily life though...

I keep one by my bed for dreams but I get about 99% garbage from it. Every once in a while I'll write down something that helps me solve a problem down the line though.

I also keep two small moleskines in my back pocket. One is for quick sketches, painting ideas and locations of places I'd like to come back and paint. The other is for book/movie/music recommendations and to write down ideas for writing.

I started a blog not too long ago, but as far as like a private journal I don't have one.

Though sometimes I wish I had recorded certain events, like when I launched a certain site/service etc. I usually go by the first post in the forum of that site to know, but it be cool if I had actually kept track of the date itself.

Also they need to make blog.anandtech.com actually resolve to something. :p

My journal would be so depressing. How I don't have a job after graduating from college... no girlfriend... and no money.

Hmmm why would I want to read about this later in life?

No, my life is far too boring for a journal, blog, twitter or RSS feed.

Update 08:00 AM: had breakfast: Starbucks coffee beans and Quaker Oats apple cinnamon oatmeal. Heart-healthy and delicous!

Update 09:00 AM: started writing code, lift that barge scrape that HTML.

Update 10:00 AM: time for some Tropicana Grovestand OJ. Tasty!

Update 12:30 PM: lunchtime! Campbell's sirloin burger & veggies soup and some Welch's grape juice. No scurvy for me!
