A very old and basically worthless system. Including monitor, speakers, keyboard, printer, etc.

Is there a proper procedure?

You should recycle the monitor, lot of lead etc. Here in Seattle area there are quarterly(?) events where you can bring the monitor and $10 and it will be properly / safely recycled.

Check waste disposal and/or recycling in your yellow pages.

Note that there are a few people still looking for 386 / 486 parts for retro gaming PCs, if your parts are working they'd at least pay the shipping and keep some of your system out of a landfill.

In most decent sized cities there are charities that collect old computers and send them out to non-profit orgs etc. Here in Canada there are places that send them to Cuba, but I doubt that happens down south.

It depends on the system too. Most charities are looking for anything from low-end pentium on up. It all depends on what it's going to be used for.

None of my computers are that old, so they're still around. Like somebody else said; they turn into hand-me-downs. My brother has my previous system (750 Duron) and my parents use my original k6-2 / 400MHz system to do a little internet surfing and play some old games on. If I were to build another system at some point, I have a few neighbors who I know would like a crack at my older ones, so they'd just get passed around some more. (Even the old 400 would be a drastic improvement over the one guy's 486/66 and Pentium 60 systems :p)

Just put it out on the curb visible. Someone is bound to stop and pick it up during the night. Around here, there are a few trucks that go around picking up items in the garbage. Neighbors have put out TVs that were taken within the hour, bikes even faster...

you can do something similiar to above,, but put in yard with sign free computer or something. If its really old you might be able to run it in dos and turn it into a mp3 player.

You could donate it to Goodwill or some other charity. They may even come by and pick it up. Is it too old for a school shop?

I dunno about you guys but I smash all my old parts and throw the pieces out after I buy a new rig. Yesterday I destroyed my old 17 inch CRT with a baseball bat and chucked into a dumpster at my work. Its fun.

I salvage all useful parts - and then I make systems and give them to those who cannot afford to buy them,

Same. One man's trash is another man's treasure (or however that quote goes).

LMAO! Leave it on the curb - that is good.

Usually with me it gets moved around.....

My parent's 233mhz pentium was passed on to my little brother and sister who use it for solitare (they are like 10)

my 550mhz pc was passed on to my parents

I got a new pc

my bro got a new pc :)

I'll prolly just keep passing it on....then the 233 will go to my uncle who has like 100mhz pentiums a FP memory
