Do you judge people based upon their major in college?

Usually I do. People who major in things that are not engineering tend to strike me as, "I'm not planning on getting a decently paying job after college." And sometimes as, "I'm a student who gets a useless degree while racking up lots of debt." (Private school+Useless major)

I ask what they plan to do with that major and they generally respond with how they don't know.

So you basically look down on others even though you are a useless piece of crap yourself. Awesome.

I have a useful major. It usually indicates what kind of person they are. If they are not very pragmatic, they go for useless degrees. If they get a somewhat useless degree but have ambition for something reasonable then that's different. (But not common)

but...while you might be getting a useful degree (jury's still out on whether you finish...) you're still a useless person.

As a biochemistry major I used to, but then I realized how clueless so many people in my supposedly difficult major were. That said, I still have major respect/admiration/mancrushiness for anyone that can complete an engineering degree, assuming it isn't from a joke college or a 2.00 GPA student or something.

This is just another example of how poorly you live your life. You really need to get your head on straight.

After working in retail jobs the last 5 or 6 years NEVER. I've met some very very good people with nary a letter after their name. Which isn't to say I don't have higher aspirations for myself, eventually, but I'll NEVER judge someone else based on their degree or lack there of.

To do so is a mark of a lesser human being. Or to put it another way I look down on those who look down on those based on their "credentials".

I judge people on their name. Once hired a lady by the name of Ann Moneymaker, she made me lots of money. Hired another fellow by the name of Jack Downer. He was dull, lifeless, and lost me money. Mike Higher was always stoned or drunk. Terri Tripper was always falling down and getting hurt. No, this doesn't work everytime, but lots of people tend to follow the path of their name. Married a lady by the name of Mary Hooker. WooHoo!!!

I have worked with very intelligent people that did not go to college...and clueless people with technical degrees. So no.

I've always wondered what this "Major / Minor" thing is in America? Someone explain?

Minors are largely stupid, pointless, and not worth discussing. It's basically recognition of the concentration of what are generally elective courses in a undergraduate area of study.

Major is just your standard undergraduate degree.

As for the OP, I'd be lying if I said I didn't mock liberal arts students fairly often.

Ah OK, I understand, over here we don't have such things a degree in x is just a degree in x there's no two subjects.

When I was in school, I did. But when you get in the real world and have a couple of jobs, you find it doesn't generally matter and in most cases, it doesn't even matter where the degree is from. If you're going to judge people in the business world, you should judge them on work ethic and their ability to play well with others.
