Do you invest in a power supply brand?

I always went with the cheapest power supply I could find at the wattage I wanted thinking power supply is the thing you spend the least on.

Do you think I did a mistake? Is it possible to get less performance out of your system because you have a cheap PSU?

There are Items known as "Infrastructural"(IE: Case, Hard Drives Etc.) a Good PSU is an investment that will last, if purchased correctly.

It is the one item in your build, that can single handedly reduce your hardware to a smoking pile of junk by not delivering clean power.

So then the question remains... Was the 40 or 50 dollars that you cheaped out on worth toasting your $1000.00 investment in hardware ?

Yes you made a mistake. Now your xxxx budget system is resting in it's hands. If the cheap PSU's blows up then you lose your whole investment.

As far as performance goes, well a cheap PSU could cause some instability but also I hear that if OC your system a better PSU can get you higher OC's due to better ripple/noise suppression thus providing more clean power than those with a cheap PSU. However I can't verify that.

This is what happens when you don't purchase a quality PSU.

You don't necessarily have to purchase an expensive unit, but just a unit that is "decent" enough quality and puts out enough power for your components. Anything above that depends on your budget and your future upgrade plans.

I never buy PSUs by brand.

I buy them first by reading the PSU labels. Are the PSU labels good ones or illiterate versions? If the PSU labels are good ones then did they have any inherent weakness shown in the labels?

If the PSU labels aren't much good, what else are also not much good inside the PSUs?

etc...

The label means squat!!!
A moron is a person who uses ONLY what the label says as the sole criteria for buying a PSU!!!

Morons buy PSUs using ignorant belief and blind faith from other moronic experts for whom basic fundamental voltage regulation is mumbo jumbo. 🙂

I already showed you that by following your simple PSU label that you can still be wrong with that OCZ PSU you linked to in the other thread. So calling Jediyoda a moron isn't even necessary.

You showed me you didn't use your brain plus having unshakable faith and belief. 🙂

I do have PSU JOE AVERAGE basic fundamental voltage regulation used in voltage regulated power supplies. And can read and comprehend PSU labels. 🙂

Considering the cost of everything else in the computer, I don't see how a person could go cheap on the single component that powers everything. I like having a PSU with plenty of power to spare.

Very well put.

I'd also add that buying established brand names is 1 part of evaluating a PSU purchase. But, brand name alone is not enough to get you the correct PSU for your system.

I also don't like online PSU calculators. Personally I prefer to learn a bit about the components in my system, specifically the rated power draw. Then, you can figure your power needs yourself.

Armed with this knowledge, you can then narrow the search to the brand or brands you are considering and then evaluate the models they have that fit your needs and budget.

Thanks for the post. There's been too much of this here lately. It's a big step backwards from the recent improvements AT has made here.

And, congrats on 10K posts Zap!

Yeah, I hear ya. I don't think we will have to worry about unnecessary flaming and trolling for a few days or so. I've been told beray has been given a small vacation so things will die down a bit cause we won't have to keep correcting his mis-information which inevitably ends up with just us squabbling.
