I need the targets for:
Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
Remote Access Connection Manager
Remote D H S M
RPC
RPC Locator
remote registry

these are found in SERVICES in Administrative tools.

I disabled them trying to test something and now I can't re-enable them

My taskbar is gone, and it takes me 15 minutes to boot into XP Pro. It NORMALLY took 30 seconds!!!!!

Go to control panel then performance and maintenance, then in the top left you will see system restore, try that,it will give you dates you can rollback to.

🙂

I believe I disabled System Restore - it was giving me sh*t when it kept restoring garbage that I didn't need and I believe I disabled that 😱

Is there another way around this?

You could try to reboot (go into the BIOS and select to boot from CD) with the XP CD in the drive and after it copies the necessary files, see if you can "repair" the installation. That should restore all the items you removed. BTW, don't do that! 😉

I thought you said that you didn't disable RPC?

OK, if you can boot to the Recovery Command Console, do so.

At the prompt, type

enable servicename start_type

If you can't remember the exact name of the service, type listsvc.

Start_type is the service mode. You should use SERVICE_AUTO_START as the parameter. If it still doesn't work, replace it with SERVICE_SYSTEM_START.

Thanks guys!

I didn't disable RPC, but I did disable everything else that started with REMOTE in the Services.

I reformatted my XP computer (Inspiron 8100, Dell laptop) becuase I wanted to get rid of NTFS.

I'll try this on the 2000 Pro computer, which i did the same thing, eek.

If this fails, are there any other tthings to try?

Might have been easier to buy Partition Magic. It can convert file systems on computers with ease while not losing any data or having to reformat. I'm pretty sure that version 7.0 supports NTFS also and could have converted it to FAT32 or FAT for you. Isn't hindsight wonderful. 😉
The only other thing I can think of is to format again and start over. This time I would think it would be wise to do a couple of incrimental backups and set some "restore points" along the way also. Good Luck!

The Dell install was fuc*ed up. 🙁

I couldn't set my mouse wheel control - it would always revert back to 1 line at a time, etc...

I disabled System Restore on the laptop but I think I'll keep these automated features enabled since I have so much giggage.
Now that I have a clean install, everythng appears to be working normally.

When I use the console, what are the service names? Are there codenames or something?

or do I type in:
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator
as the name?
