Do you have to use bundled burning software that comes with CD burner?

I may have to replace my CD burner (child's knee+open tray=oops). PC 1 has the burner and is networked to PC 2 which has a CD player. I have Nero on both PCs and use the software to burn an image on PC 2. Then I burn the CD using Nero on PC 1 which has the burner.

I have heard that you have to use the bundled burning software that comes with a burner. Is that true? Can I use nero 5 no matter what burner I buy? Current burner is a LiteOn 16x. May be time for a DVD burner! :)

Of course not. You might have to upgrade your software though if you buy a burner that is not currently supported. Nero is up to version 6.3 and I know I had to upgrade when I got my Plextor DVD burner because of software conflicts.

I always use NERO, the software that comes with burners is usually lame.

The Nero version of 5.5 that came with my burner would only burn with the burner it came with. It wouldn't burn with the other burner in my system. It said something like "to support aditional burners I'd have to upgrade to a full or retail version."

Wasn't much of a problem as I'd just use my other burner as a source drive anyhow, but it wouldn't burn to it until I got a full, licensed version from their website.

Yeah, Nero is great. Most software will work on any drive with a supported specification. The only software I've used that can be a little iffy is RecordNow Max!

OEM versions of nero and most other burner software are locked to that hardware.

If you buy a full copy of Nero, that will work with any burner.

I did find that the new burner is supported by the Nero 5.5 that I already have.
