Do you have to sign your review? What happens if you decline to sign?

Background:-
Just wondering since it is getting to be that time of the year. I don't think I have performed badly but there is too much politics going on in the office right now and I don't know what to expect.

Unfortunately I have a boss who likes to critisize people behind their back instead of being up front about it and improving employee performance. I guess I am just sceptical since it will be my first review with him and he freaking acts like a woman.

Oh I have never heard him say anything bad about me (directly or to somebody else) but several of us have noticed that he bad mouths some developers behind their back. He has bad mouthed couple guys in front of me as well.

What exactly are you asking?

EDIT: My company is fairly small and reviews are pretty informal. I've never received a written performance review.

on my reviews it says something like "your signature does not necessarily indicate agreement with the review, only that you have received it"

kind of like a speeding ticket

LOL... signing doesn't mean you agree with it. It just means that it has been presented to you, you read it, and understand it.

Does not signing a traffic ticket invalidate that as well?

Most companies don't care whether or not you sign the review. Yours may be different.

Generally there is a comment box at the bottom. You can reply there if you feel you need to, but signing it is just stating that you recieved it.

Whatever you do, do not get defensive in the comment box.

I think your question is, what are the consequences of not signing your review. All we can tell you is to ask your HR person. ;)
