Do you HAVE to reinstall Vista after a motherboard change?

Hey there,

I'm switching motherboards. I'm tired of the crap I'm getting from my Asus Striker II Formula 780i, and am going to a more stable P35 Intel chipset board from Gigabyte. I've got an existing installation of Vista 32-bit on my harddrive.....do I HAVE to reinstall Vista? Or before I make the changeout can I remove motherboard specific devices in the device manager, so that the OS will install new components from the new board.

Any thoughts?

No problem.

Too bad you gave up on the Striker. I think you should RMA and start over - these are difficult motherboards (600/700 series chipsets), but if configured properly (almost all the BIOS settings manual), they can work well.

Good luck!

How do I handle multiple hardware versions; can I use a single image?

Unlike earlier Windows versions, Windows Vista does not require a separate image for each type of hardware abstraction layer (HAL). However, customers can only install Windows Vista on ACPI-compliant computers. There is a tradeoff between the development effort required to deploy a single image for all departments and computer types and the simplicity of just creating an image for each. So, it?s still common for customers to develop one image for desktop computers and another for laptop computers. The choice really comes down to the imaging strategy that customers choose to use: thin image or thick image. For help choosing an imaging strategy, see http://technet.microsoft.com/e.../library/bb490297.aspx.

I've RMA'ed the Striker. It was simply unusable. I had put all my settings to manual, to no avail. I consistently had temp issues with "stock" settings, and I was having intermittant LAN issues in which the motherboard adapters were not accepting a dynamic IP. Multiple users of the Sriker II reported this same issue, and to fix it required a CMOS clear. The final straw was when ASUS never even replied to my tech support e-mail. I abhor poor customer service. So, I'm in wait and see mode. I'm getting a P-35 intel set from Gigabyte which has a reputation for stabiity and functions with 45nm CPU's.....maybe one day I'll be able to SLI 😉

I swapped motherboards with Vista once and it actually booted up. My USB keyboard and mouse didn't work at the login screen for a while, but after 10 minutes, Vista finally detected them.

Rather surprising considering the pain of XP. Still, I later decided to reformat and reinstall anyways because I didn't want to have any legacy cruft.

To be fair, I was going from a Gigabyte P35 board to an Asus P35 board. The differences between those boards aren't that large so Vista had an easier time.
