For it to show up in searches. Take Google for example. Do I have to register or enter my website in for Google to find it? Or does it do some automatic search and use the mysterious IP Force to find webpages?

How do you do that? I see no links or anything on Google. I'm either dumb or blind.

And no, please no Yes to the dumb or blind comment ;)

You don't have to. As long as its linked on some page that google happens to crawl, it will enter their database.

Well, a little searching around on the Google site:

www.google.com
click on "Jobs, Press & Help"
click on "Submitting Your Site" under the "For Site Owners" section

Thus I assume most major webhosts are scoured clean by the Google Internet Scrubber?

Yeah... right. BUT. Like most personal sites (that suck ass), nobody's going to link to them. ;) :p

So register just to be safe and virtually guarantee that it'll be in their database within a few days.

Ok, I'm resurrecting this thread, cuz I have a question. (Believe it or not boys and girls.....searching DOES help :p)

How exactly does your site make it to the top? Is it based on hits? If so....I'm assuming "unique" hits?

A friend of mine asked me about Google specifically. He wants to know how do you get your site moved up in their ranks.

Thanx in advance

They base it off the search words and the frequency people go to your site after the search.

IE. if people search for "bukkake" and they click on your site often you get pushed up.

PageRank is what gets you on the top. It's really mostly luck and the number of links to your site. However, it's not best to just randomly add links to a "link farm". A link to your site from a site that's PageRanked 1 will have much less weight than, say, if a site that's PageRanked 6 links to you. It also has to do with how often you update, the structure of your pages, what type of content you have, and a few random variables thrown in for good measure. In other words, getting to the top of Google takes a lot and you're never really sure what's going to work, and it could change next month.
