Do you have to make a playlist to transfer songs to an Ipod

I am trying to set one up for someone and I am a Dell DJ user.

I installed the software and open Itunes and see the list of files but they don't seem to be on the Ipod when I try to list songs.

No, they should all sync in and then under 'browse' the artists, albums, etc. will be listed there.

1.) Open iTunes
2.) Load Music onto iTunes.
3.) Plug in iPod, select "update iPod"
4.) ...
5.) Profit!

Maybe I have to reformat because it just hung in the format mode while connected to my PC and Itunes shows some files on the Ipod but I don't believe it shows anywhere near the max 4GB space (only like 107MB).

Just run the updater and reformat, correct?
