No. I've had it for a year and a half, and I have no landline, nor do I have the boxes plugged into a phone line....

I should add, this is for DTV, although I assume Dish is the same...

You just won't be able to order PPV with your remote....

DirecTV says you need to... but, I unplugged my phone line as soon as I realized they were sending and collecting info thru it. That was within about a day and a half. The only thing I could not do was oder movies thru my teevee remote. No Biggie, as I just did it online.

Now that I have TiVO, I have had the phone line in, because I don't know what will happen if I take it out. DirecTV says I cannot access TiVO without it, but I am not so sure.

The tivo software updates regularly during the middle of the night. I have one box without tivo and I leave that off, but I leave the tivo on plugged in.

comcast hdtv dvr box > satellite

no phone lines, just cable

this is assuming, of course, you don't care about having certain programming that might only be available on directv (sunday ticket)

not to me
the only difference i know of is that you can't order the pay per views through the remote. you have to use your phone/touch tone for pay per view if the box isn't on the phone line

i think it does some other background crap, but it is stuff that doesn't effect the user

some of the older boxes might be different , but the newer ones can get software updates from the satellite. the old ones might have pulled updates from the phone? i don't know

D. Ordering Pay Per View. You may order DISH Network pay-per-view Services by using your on-screen Program Guide and remote control unit to select the movies and other events we offer. To order DISH Network pay-per-view Services, your DISH Network DBS digital receiver must be connected to a telephone outlet. You may also order DISH Network special events and pay-per-view Services over the telephone by calling the Customer Service Center or by using our automated system through the following toll-free number:
1-877-DISH-PPV (347-4778) for ordering movies
A small fee will apply for use of the automated system (Pay-Per-View Automated Fee) or the Customer Service Center (Pay-Per-View Fee).
E. For proper operation of your Equipment, DISH Network requires that you connect each DISH Network receiver on your account to a telephone line. For accounts containing multiple receivers, each receiver must be connected to the same telephone line.
notice is doesn't elaborate on how "proper operation is effected by not having it on the phone line. i have had my dish in this house for 1.5 years and have always only had one of the recievers on the phone line, not both of them

For Standard DTV receivers you don't (Including the High Def), For the Tivos you should (they say you need it and it will annoy you big time if you don't).

Dish on the other hand, If you don't have one with the 322 and 522 (625s now) they charge an extra $5 a month, the older 311/811s you don't as far as I know (Then again I haven't seen one in a while so verify that first).

Too bad they seem insistent on offering the smallest hdd possible, just recently upgrading it from 80GB to 120GB. The Directv HD-Tivo is 250GB.
