I haven't had a landline phone in a long time, and I don't think I'd get one just for DSL. I looked at SBC Yahoo DSL's website and they have a box where you enter a number to see if you can get service in an area. Assuming I can get service here, do I have to have a landline phone to get DSL?

If you do not have a telephone service they charge you extra fee (Telco switches and line usage cost money:Q).

In most cases this charge will be similar to basic phone service.:brokenheart:

However do not be shy call the ISP and ask them, they should know.:D

Spoooon, ADSL is run on the high frequencies on the same wire as a POTS line. While technically possible to not have dialtone on a loop but have ADSL on the loop, no LEC that I know of will do it. Partly because they really really want to sell you a POTS line (that IS their business) and partly because they don't like customers being different and some regularity makes the provisioning and support process easier for them. Also remember that residential ADSL is a cheap service, often even a money-losing deal... they normally aren't going out of their way for any one customer.

SDSL, SHDSL, HDSL, VDSL, and so on are run on their own pair. Many LECs will be extremely confused about you trying to provision the dry loop for these services without a POTS line because their engineers use the POTS line's records to find you and to find the cable plant components between you and the CO, but if you are persistent and your data provider (DCLEC or DILEC) is clueful, this can be worked around. I moved and ordered a SDSL and POTS line at the same time - the POTS line not having landed yet caused some trouble on the SDSL loop's order, but the DCLEC was able to beat the ILEC up enough to get them to just figure it out.

(Have I used enough Telecom Act of 1996 acronyms yet? ;)

Though It may be possible as before mentioned, you do need to have a line running to yoru house (probalby does).

as was said, call up the company you are looking to buy the DSL from and ask them if they can do it without a landline number. They might be able to do it, or they may make you set it up with a phone company.

if you need a landline, you can usually get cheap service if you get incoming calls only, or local only service, just check it out.

ps How do you survive with out a landline phone?

I use my cellphone but refuse to talk cell to cell unless i HAVE to. static+static = more static.

I haven't had a landline number in over 4 years. :D The only problem I have is that some places won't deliver food to my place.

I was hoping I could just get DSL because it's cheaper than my cable modem account, but if I have to get a landline number also, the price gets up to the point to where the savings would be negligible. Oh well.

I also dont have a landline (cell phones are nice and often come with free longdistance)

I live in an apartment and politely asked my downstairs neighbor if they would like high speed internet.

they aggreed, I droped wires down the chimney, and we split the bill.

make sure they realize there will be small extra cost of a router ($30-50if you dont want to do spend long shopping)

it kicks ass!

Bellsouth DSL in SC wouldn't do it. I didn't follow it up very rigorously (they might if you ask nicely enough, who knows), since the only reason I was calling was because my cable was being lame at the time.

martind1, if any folks in this forum in GA call up BellSouth and get them to do it, I'd be impressed. Telcos are very very experienced at disobeying government/PUC/court orders they don't like.

There was one great DSL-related case a while back where Verizon was being fined millions a day for failing to comply with some or other ruling... they just called the millions a day a business expense. They'd rather eat it than comply.
