Do you have to have a certain memory sequence?

Should you install Vista using a certain amount of memory and then add more memory after the install? My friend told me to do this but I'm curious as to what you guys think about this.

I've had to do it a few times. If the install doesn't work, then do it. Or play it safe, take out all but 2 gigs, do the install, and plug in the rest. Not all that complicated really.

If your DVD is not Service Pack 1 then you may need to install with only 2 GB.

The installation issue I've run into on 2 PCs is that I just got a blank screen with '_' in the upper-left corner after the first reboot. The fix I found was to start with a completely blank hard drive (no partitions) and to disconnect the second hard drive I had for data.

Yes. SP1 included the fix to take care of it. You can also download the fix on its own but that isn't going to do you a whole lot of good when you're installing Vista for the first time... :)
