You don't have to, but it scores big points with a father, especially if he has any doubts about whether you're good enough for his little girl.

If he doesn't approve, you need to be sure you know why. It could be a deal breaker.

Well, I guess getting engaged is like a pre-commitment thing? Like for example 1 or both parties are on the edge of a prospective career and needs to concentrate? or maybe one is studying still and unable to financially settle down.
