Do you have to ask the girl's dad's permission before..

Not a tradition in my family. Usually it's pregnancy thats the precurser to a marriage.

You don't HAVE to, but it is a nice gesture.
Really it matters on how seriously both of you take family. Would you marry her without her father?s approval? Would she?

Um Im missing something, whats the difference between asking to get married or asking to get engaged?

Edit: toekramp beat me to it... WTF are you talking about?

You ask her to get engaged? Not marriage, just engagement.

You don't have to, but it scores big points with a father, especially if he has any doubts about whether you're good enough for his little girl.

If he doesn't approve, you need to be sure you know why. It could be a deal breaker.

I guess it really depends.. My husband didnt ask my father.. but.. when you ask a girl to get engaged am i wrong in thinking its the same as asking to get married? hmmm?

Well, I guess getting engaged is like a pre-commitment thing? Like for example 1 or both parties are on the edge of a prospective career and needs to concentrate? or maybe one is studying still and unable to financially settle down.

Engagement is just "being engaged"

not married. If you're engaged it doesn't mean you have to get married.

Its a simple way to keep other hands off the pootie.

k, my mind hurts. Engagement, is saying you are 'engaged' (An engagement is an agreement by a couple to enter into marriage at some future time) to be married. So if you are asking the father, you are asking about marriage. No father is going to be like 'yes you can be engaged, but no you can't marry my daughter'.
