Not that I'm knocking you, but you hate those corporate get togethers. So maybe it's just you?

I would agree with that theory if it weren't for the fact that it has never been an issue before and most of the IT guys here don't attend them either. I guess I like working with geeks and there aren't any here.

So this. I'm the youngest employee here by about 15 years.
in my case, I'm only the youngest by 3 years, but I'm the only person without a wife/kids, so we don't have a whole lot of common ground when they're rushing home after work and I'm meeting my friends to go a bar and maybe find a hookup.

Yeah. I've been out after work for drinks and food with 6+ people from work. Usually once a week with several of the same people. My boss being one of them, heh.

It's not like I always want to hang out with them but if they're cool at work then I'm down to hang out with them outside of work.

Not only that, but those are pretty much my ONLY friends around here. Moved far away from home for work and that's where I meet people. Luckily most of them are good people to hang with. A fairly large group hits the local bar every Thursday.

My best friends are coworkers. Of course, I work with intelligent, competent physicists and engineers, rather than random d-bags, so that might help a bit.

I'm friends with just about everyone I work with. I have been at the place for 6 years, and moved up from one of the lowest spots to the head boss (only the owner out ranks me) - I have to be careful to make sure my "friends" know I am the boss. But outside of work we are all just good friends, and they see no reason to tip-toe around me. Hell most of them were above me in the chain when we became friends.

The place has been closed for 3 years and we still all get together once a year. A couple of the guys I'm real good friends with. I worked there 18 years.

First place I worked at I had several work-friends that eventually persisted to acquaintance+ relationships after I (and many of them) quit. I'm VERY good friends with one of them but the others are people I have no qualms grabbing coffee with but it's a little awkward actually having them over to my house.

Second place I worked at, not so much. I made one really close friend who is one of my absolute best friends, first person other than my husband that I texted in a recent family emergency, etc. There were other people I liked but it would be weird if I attempted to get back in touch for a non-career related reason.

Current job, I have one person who I think would potentially be a friend but my closest contact has been an employee at a client. It was a small-world scenario; she helped her uncle start a the pre-eminent forum for a very specific sub-interest, and my husband happens to be the third top poster on that forum and knows her uncle well. It gave us a head start in getting to know each other and feel safe disclosing about ourselves, so it's been a nice relationship. I look forward to the project being over so we can drop some of the professional pretense and just hang out.

Yes I do. Some of them I'm not really friends with outside of work, but I try to have a fun and friendly relationship while at work... usually involving ribbing on each other. :p

Nothing wrong with mixing both. Nothing was more business focused than my last job and there were geeks and we had fun. I'll never forget drunken gaming night. :D

And of course, I don't work for a typical business at this point anyway and to be honest, I do somewhat miss working for an actual business.

there are people i am friendly with and we've done things once in a while, but we don't hang out regularly.

i only have 1 friend from a previous job that I hang out with and keep up with on a fairly consistent basis.

I don't hang out with anybody from this job, but I still have plenty of friends from my old one.

Most of my coworkers here are older (just two around my age, but in different departments) and a lot of them come off as racist. At my last job we had a smaller, younger, and more racially diverse group :)

Quite a few, I've been with this company for 15 years. I've met a majority of my most trusted and respected friends at the office over the years.
