I read in a pamphlet at the doctor's office that it's specks of protein that are present from birth, and that they're harmless.

wow!...didn't know others had this too...i've had it for years now, duno when i first noticed it, but i always just ignored it...tho if i look for it or if i'm just spacing out, i see them, whether my eyes are closed or not...it's only my left eye...and i see better with my left eye, duno if that has any significance....

hehe

It's funny you should ask that. I just went to the Optometrist today to get a prescription for glasses. I've had a vitreous floater in my right eye for about a year now, but I'm almost completely used to it, so it doesn't bother me. And it only shows up every now and then. When I spoke to the Opthamologist last year, he said it might go away or it might not, but that it wasn't really anything to worry about. Today my Optometrist said the same thing pretty much, but that it could stay with me for life or gravity might just pull it down to the bottom of my eye, where it wouldn't be a problem.

BTW, my right eye's 20/100 and my left (dominant) eye is 20/30. :s Oh well, just going to make sure I have some friends and relatives come with me to pick out my frames. :)

I have a floater. It gets really annoying sometimes too. But I would say get them checked, but I havn't. Someone said something about Flashes. DEFINATELY get them checked. My dad had a flash and it turned out he had a hole in his retina. He had to have laser surgery... stuck a needle in his eye to keep it from moving. Nasty...
But it worked..

I have floaters in my eyes but they generally only tend to show up when I'm looking at the monitor. Like right now I notice at least one in my left eye. Fun. :/
