do you have cell phone insurance?

I pay the accidental theft insurance from Tmoblile, it adds like i think 3$-4$ to my cell phone bill monthly. I recently heard that the only reason people buy this insurance is to go back in 4 months and claim they lost their phone to get a new one for like $15. Is there any truth to to this? Has anybody ever done this before? Can they check whether or not you have been using your phone?

yes i do

$25/year from Verizon, worth it since i've already lost my phone and i would have had to have bought it for $60

In fact I just had to get a new PocketPC Phone Edition, but they no longer carried that model, and had to give me the HP6315. I was sooooo depressed, OH WAIT!!! I was so happy I got the upgrade.

Crazy lady: "Hello, welcome to ___insureance. May I have your info etc...."

***EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION**

Crazy lady: "Well Sir, now that is taken care of, what is the reason that you are requesting your phone, that is to say, how was your phone damaged?"
Me: " yeah, well, I don;t um...I kind of got it wet in the ...with the clothes..."
Crazy lady: "sir, did you accidentally put it in with your laundy?"
Me: "Umm...heh..yeah."
Crazy lady: "that's absolutely fine Sir. In fact, if you had noticed, that is actually stated as a reasonable claim on your insurance information card"
Me: "No sh!t?"

😀

Heh, my Dad just did something similar, and sure enough, the details of water damage were on his insurance app. 😛 Heh, they replaced his $300 phone via overnight Fedex😀

I've had the same phone since 1993. So @ $3 a month that insurance would cost me $432 to date and only pay to replace an obsolete phone. Guess it's not for me.

You sir are scum, for even thinking about doing this.:disgust:

no because I treat it like my most prized possession anyway because it is... spent $400 on it.

Cingular charges $4 a month per phone and a $50 deductible per use.

The way that it stands, I've got a V551 ($150ish on Ebay) and my brother who is also on my plan has a V220 ($100).

Maybe if I had one of those smart phones or a full-on PDA, it would make sense.

For me, 1yr plan, it's pretty much a waste of money. Considering you can get a new phone for free to start (after rebate)... and many others for $1-200 full price (worst case). If it breaks you can get it replaced under manuf.warranty. If you lose it/ gets stolen then $4*12= $48+$50 deductible = $98 to replace phone under warranty for 1yr coverage vs buying a new phone at cost.

Where it's maybe helpful: $300+ phone that you have to have... or 2yr+plans.
