When I was in college I lived in an old apartment that only had carpet in the kitchen and the bathroom. The rest of the place was hard wood. The two rooms that should never have carpet.

Nope, all tile and hardwood throught the house. Only carpet is in the bedrooms and the basement.

The house did come with wall-to-wall through most of the upstairs and main floor but that was ripped out ages ago.

only ever saw a house like that once... friend of mine growing up; I think the house was built in the 70's.

my bathroom floor is tile right now, though I'd prefer linoleum (concrete floor underneath, though, so that was a no-go when I tried to have it done). 2 rugs (outside of the shower and in front of the toilet bowl to cover a cracked tile) and a litter mat.

Nope but I wish we had heated floor and a towel warmer rack.

I'm always surprised that designers don't make it so that the hot water pipes run underneath the bathroom floor.

I had this one apartment once where the hot water pipes ran through the wall in back of my closet; it was amazing because my clothes were always warm and toasty in the winter.

Carpet in the bathroom is nothing. We looked at a house for sale a few years ago in what used to be the most exclusive part of town. That house had wall to wall carpet, and by that I mean the walls were carpeted. The study actually had leather on the walls, but the rest of the rooms had shag carpet on the walls. That must have been the height of living back in the 1970's.

My mother was always a vacuum freak. It made her feel like her nasty rotten place was clean or something just because she vacuumed the moment a spec of anything hit the floor (IOW, several times a day). As a result, she laid down a bunch of carpet squares in the kitchen and bathroom just so she could vacuum there too. I was still a kid but I vehemently objected at how unsanitary that was, explaining that vacuums don't suck up mold and mildew from inevitable liquid messes in those areas.

Sure enough, I visited her recently and took a peek under one of those squares to see mildewed and disgusting linoleum and moldy undersides of the carpet squares. Gross.

On top of the tile floor I have a thick little throw rug that's about 14" x 36" right in front of the sink. I stand on it when I'm shaving.

I can think of few things worse than carpeting in the bathroom. Just think of what is growing and living in that moist humid pile of absorbent material. Fuck no, I'd rather walk outside barefoot.

We have rugs in front of each of our sinks, the shower, and in front of the toilet. Anything else would be disgusting.

Carpet in the bathroom = nasty! D:

Inexpensive & easily replaceable rugs are the way to go.

I didn't know this was a thing.

Yes, and it matches the drapes. ;)

Might as well have carpet in the garage.
I had this as well for awhile. I lived in this rental, and happened to have a huge piece of carpet that was stained and I was going to toss out, so decided what the hell and carpeted the garage. It was not as bad as you might think. You just have to not care about the condition of the carpet. Then when I moved out I pulled it up and the floor of the garage was like new.

My parents do. Yuck.

They grew up in an era where "wall-to-wall" carpeting was something that was ultra-exclusive and showed signs of wealth/comfort. To this day they think that hardwood floors make a house look unfinished and cheap.

Different mindsets, I guess.

So that's why my father put carpet in the kitchen. I walked into his kitchen one day and there was carpet there. I was like: "Dad? Why is there carpet in the kitchen?" He goes: "Because I want it". I figured maybe he slipped on some grease or water and obtained a subdural hematoma on his keister and didn't want to talk about it.
