Education.

Srsly though, I give cyclists room when I go around them. I have to. Lord knows they aren't looking out for their own safety, riding in a zig-zag pattern in the lane at 20mph on a 50mph feeder road into the freeway.

Are you talking about cyclists or semi-coherent homeless can-collectors or punk kids?

Too many people just HAVE to do something about a guy who's minding his own business out on the edge of the road when the road is wide open, no one coming in the opposing lane.

If they would stop running every stop sign in town, stop riding on the sidewalks and stop riding through crosswalks, I'd be a lot happier.

I would think that most drivers wouldn't be bothered by cyclists going thru red lights safely since it gives them a head start so that they don't get in your way or slow you down. I guess you can't win either way.

When you spend all day out on the road and see cyclists blow through 4-way stops without even slowing down, tell me what you think. ;)

How does that effect you? When you see someone in a car blow a red-light/stop sign, do you drive after them and try and ram them?

Like I said, if they didn't and stopped, you would bitch and complain that they're slowing you down or in your way.

Cage rage has no reason; some people are just irritable.

i'm gonna have to go with rarely on this one...

most bicyclists are fine, there are a select few that abuse the system though.

They piss me off when they're holding up traffic. My view is, they do NOT have the same rights to the road as I in my car do.

I have to have a driver's license, insurance, pay yearly taxes on my vehicle, the fuel for it, license tag, inspection, etc, to be able to drive it.

And any asshole of any age can buy a bike and have the same rights to the road as me? I think not. Then you come to a stop, and the bikes keep going.

As long as they get out of my way and obey the laws, no issues with me.

And you're the one fucking up the atmosphere and driving up the cost of oil, so fuck you too.
Wrong on both counts. Cars don't hurt the atmosphere and the price of oil went up because of other factors, not because of excessive demand in the US. But it's obvious that facts aren't important to you.

No, I don't see enough cyclists on the roads as it is. I am never in too much of a hurry to slow down and make it safe for everybody. Never.

Depends. If there's an available trail/sidewalk and they're not using it, they're morons. I can't speak for everywhere, but where I live even riding in the breakdown lane will increase your chances of death by a few orders of magnitude. Fortunately there are enough trails to compensate.

As for the rules of the road:

1. I will gladly ride through vacant 4 way stops. They're vacant. If you're behind me, do you really want me to come to a "full and complete stop"? Not only would it break my rhythm, I'd think it would piss you off even more.

2. I use sidewalks based on practicality. In my area, the sidewalks are typically free (can't say the same for my college town, but it's legal there and there's no other option within the town for cyclists). If someone is in my way, I will go around them assuming it is safe (and alert them when I'm about 20 ft away). That may/may not include going on the road, going up an embankment, etc. Otherwise I'll slow and follow at a safe distance until a safe passing opportunity presents itself.

3. Crosswalks are for everyone, and you'll be sitting still or going about your business while I cross. What's wrong with my using them?

true.
But in my experience, a bike usually accelerates faster than a car for the first 20 feet or so anyway. unless the car is in a hurry.

They are another car/vehicle to me and I act accordingly treating them exactly as I would another vehicle, this means when I pass I move into the other lane and pass when safe.

The rules of the road are that bicyclists are to be treated by drivers just like other cars, and that they're to act like they're cars as well. That means that they're supposed to be in the road if there's no bike lane or shoulder. Slow down, pass when it's safe.

I've seen stats where riding on sidewalks is way more dangerous than the road (She was riding on a sidewalk, and had a green light to cross at a crosswalk).
This explains why people ride on the road and why they take the lane. Also those trails you speak of are crap. They are way less maintained than road and filled with glass and other things that can cause wrecks.
