In IE 6.0, go to TOOLS - INTERNET OPTIONS - GENERAL - SETTINGS - VIEW OBJECTS. In there you may find some mysterious applets which you've forgotten about or were foisted upon you. When you right click one and pick properties, you'll get a clue as to what they're for. I found a bunch which I cannot remember installing and deleted them. I also found 2 entries for java runtime environment that were described as 'damaged' when I viewed the properties.
