there's this one guy I work with... he always calls over and wants to chat. I can't think of a way to say "stfu I'm trying to work... you know, the thing we're getting paid to be doing right now." without sounding like a jerk 😀

Tell the co worker about your gun collection and pet peeve of people who waste your time with small talk, then as he looks at you say "You were saying?".

 
Give them full attention, looking them in the eye for the first 60 sec. Gradually shift to multitasking while talking after that, until they are eventually talking to the side of your head while you are looking only at your screen typing feverishly, maybe with a drawer/file cabinet rummage or two in the process. Lather, rinse, repeat as necessary. 😛
