Do you have an LCD? Is it worth getting an LCD?

Do LCDs still get dead pixels? How is the quality these days? Financially is it a good idea to buy an LCD? Just curious...

Yes they still do, you'll usually get 0 - 4 pixels. Mine has 2 but I don't really notice them unless I look for them. Quality is good if you get one with dvi. Watch response times though. Too slow an lcd will make game playing and dvd watching very difficult. 35-25 or lower is ideal. Financially it's probably not worth it yet. You can get a 19" Monitor for < $200. A 19" lcd costs around $900.
If you have $700-$1000 to blow on a 17-19" lcd then go for it. If you can put the money to good use elsewhere don't get an LCD yet then.

[*]Yes
[*]Good quality, and easy on the eyes
[*]Do you really need an LCD? If you have a nice CRT I don't think you need one. I had a 20" Dell FP2000 for a while and it was really crisp and thin, but I prefer my 21" P1110 FD Trinitron for games and DVD movies. It wasn't as crisp as my CRT, so I returned it.

Yes, and yes.

Just make sure you get a good one though. It's your monitor that you stare at all those hours on the computer, you may as well spend a bit more and treat your eyes a little better. LCDs are easier on the eyes and when used with DVI are usually sharper than CRTs. But as was mentioned, keep an eye on response times if you're into gaming.

Thanks for your input, Mani. I am not a gamer at all. Screen clarity and colour accuracy and overal picture quality is pretty much the most important stuff for me. Every flat panel I've seen has been completely flicker-free. I've been using 70Hz on my 15" for a long time now, it doesn't bother me, but LCDs seem to just look ... different, I guess because of the way they deliver the image. It's so much easier on the eyes, even if the CRT isn't "hard on the eyes"..

n00b question. Are the resolution adjustable? I've never bothered on my laptop...humm.

Like can I go from 1600x1200 in one game and 1024x768 in another with no problem? Work just like a CRT?

If they still have dead pixels I'm going to stay away for a while. Need one that's 20-22". $$$ :(

What the hell, is that a Mod you did to your bed? You need a crossmember support running for the left to right side down low.

Also clean the racing stripe running down the middel of your seat.

LCD's do not function well outside of their "native" resolutions. Like, if an LCD reccomends 1024x768 @70Hz it may not work properly outside those specs. That's why I don't have an LCD. I like to play games, and I don't like to be locked into one resolution.

IMO, as good as the flat CRT's are now, the LCD's are just not worth the money unless you're in a tight cram for space, go to LAN parties often, or are just rich. If none of the above describes your situation, then I don't see the point in shelling out $600+ for an LCD. But everybody is entitled to their opinion and some may disagree, which is fine. I'm just giving you my 2 cents worth.

I currently have 2 LCD's, and this one is by far the one I like better:

DP8000

I have yet to buy a display that's quite as good as it for gaming and movies. Gaming is an absolute blast on it.

Unfortunately, it retails for 4 times what my cheaper 20.1" 1600x1200 Dell 2000fp LCD retails for.

I cant say for desktops but, with laptops, running a 1024x768 LCD at 800x600 or 640x400 for games is perfectly fine and you get a bit of free FSAA while your at it :) but don't think about using it at another res for web surfing or general use. Some people find 1024 and 1280 for a 15" too small.

But, yes, adjusting down for games works fine.

I really like my Dell 2000fp, it does have 1 bright "on" or white pixel but if I do about 10 minutes of web browsing to pages with white backgrounds is shuts off. Strange. Even when it's on, playing a game that has any sort of action like FPS shooters, you have to have eagle eyes to actually see a dead or ON pixel. The dell has a native resolution of 1600x1280 but I run everything 1280x1024 for gaming and DVD movies. Unless my eyesight is that poor I really don't see ghosting or poor images. I'll have a new rig built this fall with a DVI connection so I'm hoping for even better images. I had a Samsung 6Ne 17th monitor, this LCD has a much better picture for DVD and games not to mention size.

Like a few others have said, do your research and look for one with an excellent response time and high contrast rating but still try to see one in person. Every eye and everybody likes something different.

RSI, it sounds like you would really appreciate what an LCD offers then. Just make sure you do some research and find a good panel. I personally own two Dell 2000FPs - they're not cheap, but for the price I don't think there's anything out there that touches them.

If you need portability, and you are not a gamer, then I say an LCD monitor may be worth it. But I agree with Rebel7254. You are stuck with one NATIVE resolution and if you run your game at a different resolution, it won't look too good. I'd say get a good CRT monitor for now and wait for the
ThinCRT monitors to arrive. These have major benefits over LCD screens. I just bought a Sony G410R 19" monitor and love it. It has a lot crisper and clearer display then any cheapy monitor you will find in a retail store. I did spend more, but I'd rather have a good crisp, clear display to look at.

gotta agree.. Gotta admit they are damn sexy.. but the average models out there are not for gamers. I dont wanna burn a whole in my wallet for a lcd thats capable of gaming. Waiting on second generation LCDs.
